Could anyone explain to me where I should begin if I'm interested in ophthalmolgy research? I think the obvious would be starting from the school I'm currently attending, but my school really doesn't have any eye-related research...

I go to a school that's about 45 min. north of Chicago (Rosalind Franklin University).

Thanks

There's a lot of overlap between neuroscience and retinal research, perhaps there are some professors working on eye related stuff in that department.

you may also want to look into robot assisted microsurgery (i.e. tactile sensation, feedback, etc.) and OCT imaging

It depends on what sort of time you have... for your summer between first and second year, start sending emails over the holidays to any and every ophtho department you might be interested in. Google search and see what happens. That is how I got my 2007 summer ophtho research at UCSF and I go to school in DC. I am so glad I did it! It was an amazing experience and now I have wonderful mentors in SF. Not bad! 😉

Just email different labs and see who replies... Philly, Baltimore, Miami, etc. You never know who might have an outstanding opportunity waiting for you! :luck:

Were you able to get any support such as a summer fellowship or the lab to pay salary to you?

probably depends on the niceness of the lab in question... In undergrad, I did 3 summers of benchwork in optho-related dev bio. I got the job by just showing up at their door and asking for any openings.

i am also interested in research, possibly optho but not restricted to this. i know optho is a very competitive field, and i dont go to a very competitive school, and on top of that, we just finished our first major course, which i just barely passed. i know, not good.... plus i have no research experience to date.
should i even bother looking for a job like this for the summer? when do you usually apply? how important are our grades in getting a summer research job? i had such high expectations...sigh....i've been off to a rough start.

thanks.

btw i am a first year.
thanks.
