Is it possible for an individual who did an Ophthamology residency to become a neurologist?

Would one have to sit for an exam or would one have to redo their entire residency?

The reason I ask is that I know of one professor of neurology who actually did his residency in ophthamology.

I believe that these days you would have to do a neurology residency. There is a lot of neurology involved in Ophthalmology but it is not close to equalling a neuro residency.

To be a board certified neurologist, I'm pretty sure you would have to do 3 years of neuro residency on top of ophtho. No need to repeat intern year.

If you do neurology residency first, you can then do a fellowship in neuro-ophthamology (I think they are two years long). This route is shorter, but you would not be able to do eye surgery without completing an ophthamology residency.

I would guess that anyone completing an ophthamology residency would also be able to do a fellowship in neuro-ophthamology.

neuro-ophthalmology is a one-year fellowship

Two routes:

1) neurology -> neuro-op fellowship = can't operate

2) ophthalmology -> neuro-op fellowship = can work as a general ophthalmic surgeon + neuro-ophthalmologist
