I just graduated last year, and I'll be taking the ophtho board exam this April. I wanted to see what the consensus is on the best books for the given testing subjects (above and beyond the Academy books, some of which are abysmal):

1. Optics, refraction
2. Retina, vitreous
3. Neuro-op
4. Peds
5. External dz, cornea
6. Glaucoma
7. Cataract, anterior segment
8. Orbit, plastic surgery
9. Ophthalmic pathology

I figure this should also be very useful for those residents taking the OKAPS. I don't plan on taking any of those review courses for $1K+.

Dr. Ou,

Welcome to the ophthalmology forum! 🙂

The fellows studying for the boards and residents reviewing for the OKAPs have used the following in addition to the BCSC books.

For general review:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...lx-jeb-7-1_book_2539148_3/103-7450124-0032604

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t..._books_1/103-7450124-0032604?v=glance&s=books

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...t_1/103-7450124-0032604?v=glance&s=books&st=*

For review of optics:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t..._books_2/103-7450124-0032604?v=glance&s=books

I haven't looked at the review notes and Mnemonics being sold on EBay by this seller:

http://cgi6.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.d...serid=tffdo&include=0&since=-1&sort=3&rows=50

Good luck on the boards! I can't believe the pass rate is only ~66% for the written boards. 😱

I have to give my vote on optics to Ophthamic Optics by Guyton, almost every optics question on last year's okap can be found in this book with the numbers changed.

I thought the MEEI review manual wasn't that helpful b/c it was a bit too arcane. Not many of the questions were on the OKAPs. The Chern review questions are more applicable, but probably a bit too easy. It creates a bit of overconfidence, I think. Something in the middle would be perfect. Haven't found it yet.

For Neuro op, the Kline, Bajandas review manual is pretty good. It's concise, and gets right to the point. I haven't seen the latest edition. I'm still using the 4th edition.

ckyuen, where can I get a copy of Guyton's optics? I couldn't seem to find it.

Copies may be obtained by sending the order form at the back of the book.

I'll type out what it says on the order form:
Please send me ___ copies of Ophthalmic Optics and Clinical Refraction, 2nd Ed. at 17.50 each, including handling and domestic shipping costs. (14.00 each for quantities 10 or more)

I am enclosing a personal check, made out to David L. Guyton for the total amount:______

Shipping label:
David L Guyton
Wilmer Institute, 233 Johns Hopkins Hospital Baltimore, MD 21287-9028

To: (your information)

Send this to guyton at the address above

the shipping label prition is bascially something they will cut out and use to mail to you. if you just type the above on word I'm sure it would work b/c it's just on a white 8.5x11 paper

ckyuen, the info is much appreciated. I would have been looking forever. What are your thoughts on the other subjects?

I'm using the BCS series books for the other topics. Also, the questions at the back of the books and the provision questions seemed very applicable to the okaps at least. there were quite a few repeats.
