Hi there! It is obviously hard to rank a new program. The Methodist program is led by Dr. Bass and all I have to say (and really all that I know) is that I met her back in Nov. when she came to give a talk at MGH. She is very respected, well known among the "surgical chairs" and is very interested in turning the Methodist program into a top-notch program. I wouldn't be as concerned with the "feelings" of the current senior residents-they will be all gone by the time you are gearing towards your research time. Dr. Bass has the connections to get you where you may want to be - a very large component of this "game" is (1) who do you know-ie. your program connections (2) do they like you and (3) who do they know. As long as you perform well in your first years and the three items above are met-you should have no problem reaching your goals. Best of luck!

Seems like a good program with some heavy hitting names. Just keep in mind that the Texas Medical Center is always changing, and what you sign on for is not always what you get. Every program has its strengths and weaknesses. Methodist is the flagship hospital in the Texas Medical Center and has plently of money, which is more important than most people think it is. Weaknesses are that you'll probably get shipped out to other places to do Oncology, Pediatrics, Trauma. They aren't affiliated with a county hospital or VA, and that is a strength/weakness based on who you talk to. The big names are well respected throughout the country, which would give you a vast network for fellowships.

any updates on the Methodist Houston program, now that it's had a few years to "mature"?
I know they send the residents out for peds, trauma and surg onc...
but surg onc is at MD Anderson, that has to be a plus right? Question is, how much time to they get at MD Anderson and what types of cases/operative experience does that provide?

I can't comment on the quality of the residents there or their structure, but they have done very well in terms of fellowship matches. Tons of CRS (helps to have the Bailey/Snyder group in fold), decent plastics matches. Surg onc at MDA is a pretty solid move, my understanding is that they do 4 months at MDA as a R3/4 with an optional 2 months of breast at MDA, but I'd double check that with the program.
