I'm an equine oriented student interested in an internship after I graduate, so I'm trying to strategically plan externships, but it's hard to choose between practices before I've been, and I only have 8 weeks of elective time to figure things out before Nov 15th. To compound the problem, some places require 2 weeks of externing to be considered for an internship, but that reduces the total number of practices I can visit before the 15th. What if I'm not crazy about any of those four places? Gah - I feel like I need a crystal ball.

So -- have any of you externed or interned at the following places? Have any of you worked there, or know specific doctors, or know people who went there or generally know anything about their reputation and quality of internship program?

Manor Equine in Monkton, MD
Rhinebeck Equine in Rhinebeck, NY
Woodside Equine in Ashland, VA
Tryon Equine in Columbus, NC
Fairfield equine in Newtown, CT

Any comments would be much appreciated!

I've never worked at Fairfield Equine, but Dr. Mitchell, the owner, is amazing. He took care of my mother's horses when he was fresh out of veterinary school and then took care of my horse. He is a wonderful vet; very gentle with the horses, patient with the clients, and very smart. He was the only vet that could figure out what was making my horse lame (and I had seen three before him). When I get to my fourth year I will definitely do an externship at Fairfield Equine just because of Dr. Mitchell. However, Dr. Neff is pretty good too.

I know that probably wasn't very helpful. But I thought I would put my opinion down anyway. Good luck!

In addition to soliciting opinions here I would suggest you contact current or recent interns at the places you're considering. Each program should be able to tell you some of the current and recent interns.

Sorry I can't help you with actual expereince with those practices. But have you asked any of your clinicians what they think of those practices?

I have, and it was useful! Good advice, for sure. However, I figure more opinions can't hurt! 🙂

Slothbear - I have TONS of information about Manor Equine in Monkton. I live right down the street and have done a 4-year undergraduate internship there. If you're interested, send me a PM with questions.
