I missed a genetics requirement in my application to KCUMB (I have already graduated and am no longer in school). They will not even look at my application until I show them I am enrolled in the course. So, I enrolled through Community College but must crash the course. Do you think it is worth taking that course just to have my application viewed considering my obligations of a 65-hour workweek (1 full time and 1 part time job) and competitively training for a marathon? Or should I just consider myself out of the running at the school?

What would you do?

I'm confused.

1. Why must you "crash the course?"
2. Why do work so much? Get a loan for God's sake.
3. Is the marathon more important than medical school?
4. You will be rejected if you don't get a "C" or above in the course, but you may be able to enroll in it this summer, as long as the course is completed prior to matriculation.

Or you could just not run 20+ miles...and torture yourself once you have an acceptance in hand..

If you have applied to many other schools and KCUMB is not in your top 2 or 3 then good luck in the marathon!

Yeah and don't be afraid of loans in your last semester if the above is not the case.

You're not supposed to get loans for life. She's not in school anymore, and one would imagine there's a reason she's working that much.

1. She's in school. We are discussions a class she is in.
2. You can take out as many loans as you want if you are going to be a doctor. It will get paid back----I promise.

She's crashing a course this spring and deciding if it's even worth taking it. my guess is that she's not working 65 hours a week to pay for a class at community college.

yes, you can take out as many loans as you want for med school, but at the moment, she's not in med school. I imagine she has other reasons for working like that. maybe she has old debt to pay off. or she's paying to put her kid sister through college. who knows.

Only $189,125 max. by the federal government. The rest need to come from private loans and depend upon your credit rating.

Even doctors file for bankrupcy.

Either way, money can be obtained.

Yes, you are right.

I am paying off my undergrad debt and saving for medical school. That is the reason for the long hours. Thank you for your support!!!

it occurs to me that I never actually answered your question. I say skip it and just write off the money you paid them, assuming you've got strong applications with other schools. I applied to OHSU and would have had to complete biochem and stats before matriculating, and I just realized there was no way I could do it, even if I did get in. I work full time and am in grad school full time. I withdrew my application and just forgot about the money. it's all part of the game.

Yeah UNECOM requires a biochem. course. I think it's unfair that they do not tell you this until after you send in your Part I, or maybe it's somewhere on the website but I didn't see it. I withdrew because I felt they were being a little sneaky and I didn't want to deal with it.

is it your first choice I think is the most salient question, followed by do you have other acceptances...

if it's your first choice take the class!
If you have no acceptances, take the class!

if it's not your first choice and you have acceptances to schools you rate higher...don't worry about the class.

I think you all have really good advice. It is not my first choice, so I am going to skip taking the class and hope that I get in where I have interviewed.

You won't get into KCUMB if you don't take the course. Keep that in mind. They rejected me for the same reason.

She made pretty clear in her initial post that she understands that they won't consider her application unless she is enrolled in the course.

I didn't read the whole thread, but KCUMB will find out about the missing course. I'm in the same situation. THey're acceptance letter says "you are accepted contingent upon you taking a genetics course."

I know I'm not thinking about money anymore. Just kicking back and borrowing all I can.

She knows about the contigency.

be careful on borrowing undergrad loans though. All open accounts for undergrad Stafford loans is deducted from the $189K cap you have for med school. Yes you can use private loans to cover the difference.

Somehow I wasn't clear. It seems that she "hopes" she'll get in anyway?

Did you put that you were intending to take genetics on your app? I had all the prereqs when I applied except biochem, which I put on my app that I planned to take it and they had no problems considering me.

Another thing, a person truly doesn't know what is their first choice until after they interview/see the school (that is unless they had already visited multiple schools before applying). But hey, if you can't take genetics then you can't and it just won't be part of your decision on where to go.

I was wondering which schools require biochem?

2 schools:

UNE- 3 credit hours minimum...this IS stated on their school website and the AACOM website for course requirements. They also offer a distance biochemisty class through their school and I hear that if you have not enrolled in biochem when/if you get their secondary, they also tell you this.

KCU-3 credits minimum.

She said she hopes she'll get in the places she interviewed, which is clearly not KCUMB, since they're not considering her application yet.
