Hello friends, one of my former fellows has asked me about her taking a job at Ourlabs in Nashville, run by Dr. Oppenheimer.

I know there have been past threads (the most recent being 2010) that either mentioned or discussed this lab. Considering it's been a while however, perhaps some of you may have more uptodate information that you'd be able to share. Please feel free to PM me if you wish.

Is your friend fresh graduate from fellowship or having some years of experience? Which specialty? Thanks.

Good article about Dr Oppenheimer right here. Does this sound like someone you would wanna work for?

On a serious note, arent all the specialty labs now in deep trouble because of Blue Cross/Blue shield's new rules for "Blue Card". What lab has a deal with every blue plan? That is gonna kill you if you do buisness across state lines.

Yea he is in the news 12 years later. Sounds like he didnt think he would be according to this quote:

"Oppenheimer, a non-lawyer who represented himself at trial, said in an interview that he plans to appeal the judgment. He acknowledged that the factual statements he made are false, but he said that he believed they were true when he wrote them. "It's going to ruin me" if the award is not overturned, he said.

Judging from his website, it seems he's made out all right.

Regarding Dr. Oppenheimer and his legal woes:

Sometimes the purpose of one's life is to serve as a warning to others. 😱

I wouldn't work for a lab like that. When CAP calls and asks me to inspect them I refuse to inspect specialty labs or pods.

I'd like to know how specialty labs are gonna survive after BC/BS's change to BlueCard. Very few labs have a contract with all blue plans. If you do business across state lines, you are likely out of network it sounds like. These speciality labs are going to have to prove that they offer testing that can't be done at a labcorp/quest etc.

OURlabs is doomed. It wont exist in 3-5 years. That business model is dying. I try to tell national labs I consult for this but they continue not to listen...interesting the lobbying groups these big labs hire in D.C. actually DO listen me but pretend not to understand so they can continue billing their clients until the end finally comes...pretty funny actually.

1-Could you kindly explain me, in detail, what "business model" you are referring to?

2-Could you list reasons why you think the National Labs will go out of business?

1.) business model of either local plants or national level TC providers who skirt around Stark laws and provide a variety of benies such as EMR subsidies etc.
These labs either are support for podlabs with the intent to roll in expensive mol. testing to make margin or are full service global providers in an OPat realm competing vs. local hospital based groups.

I play all sides of the game so Im fairly familiar with this by now.

2.) no thanks. I get actually paid to provide that information.
