The prompt for the optional essay is:

Briefly state any unique circumstances or life experiences that are relevant to your application. This is not an area to continue your essay or reiterate what you have previously stated - this area is provided to address any issues which have not previously been addressed. (2500 max characters)

While I don't have any particularly unique circumstances that greatly affected me, would using this essay to talk about experiences that helped to develop my hand skills be appropriate?

Thanks for the help!

There is no right answer to your question. If you feel what you write in that section will impress the admission committee, then go for it. What matters the most is your GPA, DAT, Personal statement, LOR :)

As long as you don't recite your accomplishments but rather show something interesting about you, it's fine. We are stuck with our students for 4 years, we want to make sure you guys are interesting :)
