Are there any opportunities in at certain doctoral programs to go abroad to study or research? I know it clearly wouldn't be possible in a PhD program to spend a semester abroad but what about a summer?

Not exactly "abroad" but some of our students spend a month in Puerto Rico. I know of others who do international research who did some traveling as a part of that. I'm eyeing Fulbright fellowships to do some work in eastern Europe sometime down the line (not in grad school).

You probably won't find study abroad programs like that have in undergrad since frankly grad school is more like the working world, where they generally frown upon leaving work for months at a time. However, shorter-term visits and travel opportunities (conferences, collaborations, training, etc.) are abundant.

A few people in my program have gone to Australia or New Zealand for the summer (ours, not theirs) via a NSF grant for the East Asia and Pacific Summer Institute. It's a pretty elaborate application as you need a full proposal and must establish a specific researcher at the host university to work with well in advance. It's an awesome opportunity, though.

Here's last year's statement:

The National Science Foundation's EAPSI Program allows US graduate students in science and engineering to conduct summer research at an East Asia or Pacific host location.

The 8 week program (10 weeks for Japan) can be spent at a host institution in Australia, China, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Singapore, and Taiwan.

NSF provides EAPSI Fellows with a $5,000 stipend and roundtrip airplane ticket to the host location. Our foreign counterparts provide in-country living expenses and accommodations (arrangements vary by host location).

Eligibility is limited to U.S. citizens and permanent residents. The proposal submission deadline for the East Asia Pacific Summer Institute 2013 has been extended to Thursday, December 6, 2012.

For more information, please read the Program Solicitation, host location-specific Handbooks, and How to Apply Guide available at www.nsf.gov/eapsi

I am in a Psy.D program and we have several study abroad programs options during the summer semesters. I think we have a few that go to Africa and we're working on connections in Europe as well. Some trips are as short as a few weeks, some others last longer than a month. I'm not sure how much research is involved, but I'm sure you could turn it into something like that if you took the initiative.

Which school are you doing your PsyD at?

I know Regent's PsyD program has several trips abroad too...possibly involving religion. I know they are clinically focused, although I am sure research would be allowed.
