Hi,

I'm a 3rd year med student considering radiology residency. I have enjoyed my time doing a radiology elective. I had some questions regarding when you finish the residency training.

1) I like doing the history and physical. Is there any field in radiology that I will get to have this type of patient interaction.

2) What type of procedures can I perform.

3) How is interventional rads vs diagnostic rads vs nuclear in terms of salary and lifestyle.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

If you like H&Ps and patient contact, and you like to do
procedures, yet like the technical aspects of radiology,
you might want to consider Radiation Oncology. This
field was formerly part of radiology, then branched off
in the 70's. You are primarily a clinician, spending most
of your day in the clinic evaluating patients. Also, you
go to the OR to do procedures, such as prostate seed
implants or tandem and ovoid insertions for cervical
cancers. You also spend time reading CTs and PET/CT
images for targeting. Lots of cool toys to play with.
Accelerators, imaging equipment, planning software,
etc. Money is pretty good. All in all, I was like you
in my third year, thinking of diagnostic rads, but
ended up choosing Rad/Onc, for the above reasons.
Best field in medicine IMHO.
