Hi

sorry this is a stupid question, but i can't seem to find the answer online. here it goes...

In organic chemistry when they have -X and -R is there any difference? or are they both the same? And if they were different, what does -X stand for? what does -R stand for?

I am looking at all this e- donating and e- withdrawing stuff and it shows that...

-R is electron donating
and
-X is electron withdrawing

-X is a halogen (i.e F, Cl, Br, I)

-R is an alkyl group (i.e -CH3, -CH3-CH2-CH2-CH3, -CH3CH(CH3)CH2) basically any carbon chain, it could also be a cyclic carbon like a cyclohexane, cyclopentane, etc.
