first id like to say that i realize orgo comes up almost everyday, therefore i apologize for being annoying. Second, what is the best book to study organic chemistry? Obviously many of you have taken this class and im sure some of you enjoyed the class and had a great book to help you.

I like the "For Dummies" series a whole lot for supplementing the textbook. They're really cheap.

Khan academy is also great and is totally free.

the school textbook along with the practice midterms/final should be suffice to get you an A

Not every professor follows the same curriculum. Some skip topics or simply follow different order. Regardless most of your exams will be based on the textbook that is required for the class and moat importantly what the professor actually teaches you and says will be covered on the exam. By using a different textbook and studying ahead from it you will not be preparing for your specific class and will just be going over topics that might not actually be required to cover.

If you really enjoy organic I guess go right ahead, but if your goal is to get a good grade stick with what actually will get you said grade.

Organic Chemistry as a Second Language by Klein, awesome book...part II however is a little different since profs usually change up the curriculum a bit but for Organic I its all the same stuff

Organic Chemistry as a Second Language. I wouldn't walk into a Ochem class without reading through the book first. Did it 1 week prior to my summer Ochem class and walked out with an A-...YEA!!

This is a good point and should not be overlooked.

Also, I find that the textbook by Wade has an excellent presentation of the material if you are looking for a supplement.

Agreed. I really liked the Wade book's presentation. I sort of tried Carey and Loudon and they were okay, but neither was as straightforward as Wade.

But definitely use your professor's text because different professors prefer different reactions, mechanistic details, shorthands, synthetic strategies etc. and you'll want to be familiar with those preferences.

Before class... Klein's Organic Chemistry as a Second Language. Just get the first semester book. Very readable as a standalone. Lots of problems. Do them. If you avoid this book you will perish.

During class... do whatever your professor does. Mine never taught from the book. She wrote her own homeworks. I want my $150 back please. 🙁

Before the ACS Organic Final (if your school does this)... get the ACS Organic study guide during winter break.

I agree that organic chemistry as a second language was very good for organic I but not so much for organic II. Unfortunately I didn't order the books until 2/3 of the way through organic I so I only got a little bit of use out of the first book and came to realize that it wasn't as helpful for organic II because, as someone already said, the professors seem to change the curriculum up for organic II more.
