Hello to all! Well I have a dillimea and I need some Advice. I have been thinking about take Organic 1 and 2 in the summer at my school. I attend UNT which has a pretty good science progama but I was wandering if Medical Schools will look down on me taking organic in summer. thanks for the advice.

I don't see why anyone should care. I took orgo in the summer at my undergrad, and it hasn't hurt me.

Orgo is like a band-aid. You can slowly peel it off, minimizing the pain but drawing it out, or you can rip it off--it really hurts, but then it's over. I say rip it off.

It's intense--by the time I finished, I would see the letters O, C, H, and N when I closed my eyes at night, and once I had a nightmare that I was molecule of phenol. Scary stuff.

Good luck!

I don't see why they would look down on you. Anyway, in terms of taking organic in the summer....if you can take an accelearated work load then go for it.....if not....then i'd wait and take the series Fall-Spring. organic 1 is easier than organic 2.

Hi-

I took organic II in the second summer session at my university. It was definitely very intense; however, I learned and (more importantly) retained the information for a long, long time afterward. So well in fact that it was my very best part on the MCAT.

Just like VienneseWaltz said, it hurts all at once. But if you bear down and make Organic your "religion" for an entire summer (such as studying two-three hours a day, flashcards, review, review, review) then you should really kick butt.

It was one of the best classes that I ever had. I wish that I had taken BOTH in the one summer.

Plus, when all of your friends are moaning about orgo during the fall and spring, you can laugh to yourself about how clever you were to get it done in ~12 weeks!

My two cents.

Hi,

I took orgo in the summer too, an I never had anyone question it. I found it helpful because it was over fast, and becasue the class was much smaller...though I still have nightmares about orgo for 5 hours every day!!

I don't think it matters at all if you took it over the summer. I think organic is easy but it does require time and taking if over the summer makes it more intense as seen in the previous posts.

I worked 40 hours/week while taking it and just had to put in a couple of hours every night.

Goodluck - you can definitely do this and get an A!

to the OP: I've taken many classes over the summer, science and non-science, and my advisor tells me it doesn't make any difference at all. Do yourself a favor and get over with it

now I wanna ask a question so that I don't have to make a seperate thread: At my school orgo lab is offered as a seperate course, one that I'm planning on taking next fall AFTER I've taken the MCATs. Is this bad? I wanna know if the test asks you about lab stuff but I can't seem to find the answer anywhere. I'd appreciate some help

i took ochem in the summer the intense one and found it hard to retain a lot of information. it seems like you remember it then forget it when all is said and done and you are kickin back after summer shcool. it is definately harder to retain the info come mcat studying time, and is fast paced. if i had to do it again, i would take it easy, finish it up during the school year, but thats me- i heard that as long as you perform as well in the summer as during the school year it shouldn't make too big of a difference

hey man,
im in the same boat as yourself. i heard bio is favored over ochem... and since lab is so small a part on the ochem and thus mcat, there is a chance it will be on the test, even if small. what i did was study the lab stuff like extractions, distillations, etc... out of the princeton review book. im hopin delaying isnt gonna be a problem
hope that helps

The lab material on the MCAT is little to none. At least on the actual two MCATs I took, there were maybe 2-3 questions on lab stuff, and I'd say you could probably learn this material pretty easily by reading it in one of the review course books, like Princeton or Kaplan. I think there were some questions on chromatography and maybe distillation stuff. None of it was terribly complicated compared to the other questions. Basically, I think you can do without orgo lab if you really need to go ahead and take the mcat before the lab class. If you can wait, than just about any bio or orgo class you take before the mcat will help you out.
good luck

I took Orgo in the summer and absolutely loved it. If you can devote sufficient time to studying, it is totally worth it. Before, I thought the information I learned would be very volatile but it was quite the opposite, I retained a lot of what i learned. I did take the lab during the school year though. I've been on five interviews and my taking OChem in the summer has never come up. Good luck and I hope it works out for you.
