Most of the med schools I've looked at (both MD and DO) require 8 hours of Organic Chemistry, which usually includes lab.

However my question is...if you have 8 hrs of Organic which DID NOT include Orgo 2 lab, are you screwed? At my school Orgo 1 lecture is 3 credits and the lab is 2. Orgo 2 is 3 credits. 3+2+3= 8. I've called a couple of schools and they said not having Orgo 2 lab isn't a big deal because I still have 8 credits, but I'm not going to call every school on my list to ask them.

Should I try and take Orgo 2 lab or should I not bother? Also I've graduated (didn't need Orgo 2 lecture or lab to earn my BS in Bio) already so going back to take one lab could be a bit of a pain in the butt, because I'd have to reapply and all that, but if I have to do it....begrudgingly, I will.

What say ye?

Some schools explicitly state their lab requirements, some however don't. The MSAR has a lot of info that can help you with this. For all other schools: should email them. My guess is that the majority of schools require 2 semesters of lab.

Try talking to your premed advisor, as s/he might know what most applicants at your school do, and how that tends to work out for them. If it helps, I'm only doing one semester (2 credits) of organic lab, but my school condenses organic I and II into one lab taken with organic II, so it might be a different situation.

I wouldn't worry too much...my school is the same way (I see you're in Texas...perhaps we go to the same school lol) and at least from what I've seen on my secondaries, it hasn't been a problem. Some, like Boston, just ask you to make a note of it when filling out a pre-req chart. 🙂

if you have the hours, there's no point in taking more lab than necessary. it's not like orgo 2 lab is going to somehow make you a better medical student.

LOL....but oh, if only it did! I'd take the silly lab in a heartbeat! Hahaha!

Thanks, that's good to hear. BTW I'm in SA.
