Hey all. I made it through Orgo 1 with an A, but am having a hard time with Orgo 2. Do any of you have any specific study guides, etc. that helped you get through it?

thanks!

Get a tutor! It changed my life for Orgo II and I realized that almost everyone else in my class was also doing tutoring. I did group tutoring so it was cheaper than private and we would work through problems together, review that week's material, etc. Our tutor knew all the orgo professors and tailored her plans based on what/how they covered the material and how the tested. I can't overstate how invaluable it was for my Orgo grade (A- !).

Edited to add: this was my first (and only) experience with tutoring so I didn't really know where to start. I asked a classmate if she knew of anyone and she said that they were actually looking for another person to join their group which was perfect.

Check with your school, OP, if you are thinking of getting a tutor, since many schools offer free tutoring services for students.

The Khan Academy websites and a free school tutor helped me get A's in the Orgos and Biochem. I definitly recommend Khan!

http://masterorganicchemistry.com is great. They guy who runs it also has an iPhone (also maybe android?) app called Reagents that is AMAZING. Worth the money IMO.

Also, not really important, but it must be super regional how people shorten Organic Chemistry. Around these parts people say O Chem and it makes me *twitch* a little anytime I hear the word Orgo. ARGHGH! Don't know why...

Haha! I was thinking the same thing. I think that "O Chem" sounds really strange if it makes you feel any better 😀

LOL...well, if we're going to be logical about it, there's only one O in the word Organic, so O Chem is truly the only proper abbreviation.👍

If we were studying Orgonic Chemistry, I wouldn't judge people who say Orgo so harshly. But I do, I do...

I went to a college whose name started with "o," and a lot of clubs and stuff used it as a prefix, so "OSwing" was the swing club "OCircus" was the circus, etc. So, "OChem" for us would have just meant the chem department in general. We tended to miss a beat when talking to chemists from other colleges:laugh:

I've never been a big flashcards person but flashcards are saving me in Organic 2 reactions, I write out substrate type and possible reagents on one side and all of the details of what is produced and the mechanism on the back and then just drill whenever I have time.

Keeping the reagents straight in my head made everything else make a lot more sense.

And also as others have said before, tutors can be amazing. But be picky, I've tutored general chemistry. genetics, and biology and some of the folks I worked with were brilliant but couldn't really put it into words without confusing their tutees.
