Hi everyone,

I am currently a junior in undergrad.
Do you guys recommend me to apply for dental school this summer before my senior year even though I have to take Orgo II my senior year?

Or should I wait a year and apply after my senior year?

Thank you 🙂😀🙂😛

I think you should wait and take organic 2 your senior year, simply because many key questions and mechanisms, rxns etc... will be on the DAT. There is nothing wrong with taking the exam your senior year.. Im taking my DAT this summer.. and I'm graduating in may.

Are you applying a year later than one would normally apply?

If you have most of your other pre-reqs done, apply earlier. Otherwise you're waiting an entire year longer to begin dental school.

^I agree. OP, can you take Orgo II during the summer and apply at for the upcoming cycle as well?

There are a few threads on this since I am in a similar situation. Some people say don't do it. Some people did it and got +20 with only ochem1. All up to you and how bad you want it.

I wouldn't recommend taking the DAT and applying to dental school before you take Organic II. Some people try and study all of the material that Org II presents by themselves, but there are so many new elements that are better understood after taking the class and having a professor explain them to you. I took the DAT after only taking Organic I and got an 18 on the organic section. You can get some of the organic II questions right on the DAT by using the basic trends you learn in the first semester of O Chem.

With that being said, I could have KILLED that section had I waited to take the test. Ultimately it is up to you, but I think it is unlikely for you to score in the 20s without the second semester.

I'm in OCHM II now. I took the DAT about a month ago just as the semester started. So the OCHM section was obviously rough for me since I had to learn second semester over break and walk in there with a ton of reactions like fresh paint on my brain. I know I sacrificed a better score by taking it over winter break. I just chose to have it done instead of taking it over summer (if my GPA was trash I'd have a different attitude). But I did good enough (whatever that means).

What you have read here is correct; most of the OCHM section is 2nd semester stuff from what I saw. If you're worried, don't risk it. It would be lame to do well everywhere and then roll a 15 or something in OCHM and have to do it all over again.
