Orientation day (s)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Agreed. As has been pointed out before, employment law requires that you be paid for any required orientation days. This creates a practical limit, since most employers don't want to pay people who aren't "working".

That said, many residency programs either have a "required unpaid orientation" (which is illegal), or have an "optional unpaid orientation where attendance is HIGHLY recommended. Although you could argue that either of these is illegal with your upcoming program, you probably don't want to be labeled as a troublemaker on day 1. Or, at least be ready for the problems you might create.

Or option 3: your program gives you a bonus for attending orientation 🙂

But I'm guessing based on your post this isn't that common?

My orientation is "mandatory" per their emails and it's unpaid. Orientation starts on Monday and goes through Saturday and clinical duties start Sunday.

Wonderful.

Yup, I'm told that we don't "officially" start working until July 1st, so we don't get paid until mid-July.

That's funny, and here I thought we were required to be there in mid-June....

I once had 20 days of orientation for a non-clinical/non-medical job. Suck it up.

This is the situation at my residency as well, but we do get paid for orientation, just not for a couple of weeks. I have experienced first paychecks being later that later paychecks at other jobs too, so this might be mostly a function of trying to add so many new people to the system all at once.

Most employers pay their employees on a biweekly basis so the wages earned won't be distributed until 2 weeks of work have been completed. Even then, there's usually another week for processing so expect to get your first paycheck 3 weeks after starting work (whatever day they say you're eligible to make money) and then on a regular 2 week basis thereafter.

We get paid monthly, on the last day of the month, in my program. Clinical duties start July 1 (with orientation starting last week of June), and we won't get paid until July 31.

I'm going to be poooooor for a while...=/

we started mid june with orientation and didn't get paid till end of July. I never really thought about not getting paid for orientation. Oh well. I know of some family and EM programs that have a month of orientation.

We start the 24 of June. I don't know if we get paid that week.

We then have a "month" long orientation (7/1-7/27) where we are in clinic, on the hospital service and doing other random things.

I hope we get paid for this month as we're performing patient duties. I never thought about the week in June, hmm.

We had mandatory 2 weeks orientation, paid. Since we weren't allowed to get paid until 7/1, they added 2 weeks salary to our yearly salary and paid us a little more each check for the rest of the year. Seems fair. You can't expect to show up 7/1 and start working. Who would take care of the patients while you are doing computer orientation, ACLS, HIPAA training, fatigue training, etc, etc, etc.
