Hi everyone?
I was just wondering what exactly goes on during orientation. My school has a two day orientation and then classes begin. Should I expect to fill out a bunch of surveys and participate in ice breakers or is it usually more formal? TIA for your input.

from what i hear at the shcool i will be attending, there are book sales, student activity fairs, white coat ceremony, library tours, etc. stuff like that.

Do we need a suit for the white coat ceremony. I might need to buy one if I do.

Orientation at UMiami consists of a bunch of sessions about the curriculum, loans, how to pay back loans and the interest that you will acquire, OSHA (protection against pricking yourself with needles), HIPPA, etc. There are also fairs discussing the various organizations/clubs present at UM and how you can get involved. There are also opportunities to buy medical equipment (stethescopes and the such) and scrubs. There will also be lunches with the second years (I'll be participating in these 😉 ), where you can ask them what to expect. At night, there will be parties around Miami where you can bond with your classmates and meet upperclassmen. Saturday will consist of Games Day, which is just an opportunity to bond with your classmates while playing sports. You will also find out which academic society you will be assigned to for the following 4 years. Academic societies are run by upperclassmen. During the year, you will have various sessions with your academic society, where you will be taught various clinical skills (i.e. how to take a history and a complete physical). That's pretty much it. Sorry I can't expand anymore, but I just started second year 2 days ago and I'm tired of studying all day. 🙁 See ya guys soon!🙂

I have a friend starting Miami this year and we were wondering about something. Does the orientation at Miami include learning basic life support?

We had a week long orientation that included having to take a BLS test and work CPR on dummies etc. Just wondering if all schools do this or not.

Two day orientation isn't too bad though. That's more than enough time. Our orientation dragged on forever.

No BLS test during Orientation. You have to do it on your own time and with your own money.

Our school does BLS/CPR cert during orientation week...sounds like we'll mostly just be sitting inside listening to people talk about various issues, clubs, policies, etc. for a week.

For the love of god, i hope we don't have to cover HIPAA :scared: I'm sooo tired of that subject since we had to do hipaa-training at work.

Now, what to do if you see a fax containing a patients name, chief complaint, and other confidential health information?

a) Call your friends and discuss it immediately.
b) Post it on a bulletin board in the hallway.
c) Make photocopies and put one in everyone's mailbox.
d) If the correct recipient cannot be found, shred it.

Thanks Canes for your answer. I can't believe you started class already. Guess we'll be seeing you in a couple of weeks!🙂

Anyone going to school whose white coat ceremony is later in the year? Temple's is Nov 14th.

I do, oh wait, I go to Temple. I will say that I did not go to the white coat ceremony for 2 reasons. First, by November the thrill of being a medical student had worn off and was replaced by the pressures of being a medical student. Second, by that point I was so happy to technically have a day with no lecture (I was still going everyday at that point) that I slept in and then studied for our first integrated exam!

U of MD's white coat ceremony is also in Nov. Now I think I might skip that too, just to look like a big nerd. 😀

What did you wear to interviews if you don't already have a suit?

(No, you don't need a suit for the white coat ceremony.)

I was a bit overweight during interviews. I've lost some pounds, plus that suit is in bad shape now after 8 interviews back and for from west to east coast
