Iam looking for a new extra curric. activity.. I mean i did a few years of research, should have around 300 hours of hospital volunteer, doing total bull.. President of my class, for leadership.. tutoring.. I want to top it off with something somewhat original, and something I would enjoy. I was thinking something non-medical, maybe environmental help.. Like some anti-global warming organization or something of that sort? How would med schools look upon that, and does Anyone have any idea's for original volunteer work?

Find a children's museum, It's fun, you get to play around with little kids and watch them do funny stuff. Also milf's galore

I volunteer at a non profit organization (Casa del Hispano) for Hispanic illegal immigrants to help them achieve legal status. (I speak Spanish though). If you live anywhere in Texas I bet you could find something like this.

An organization to help illegals get legal status.....?

Hmmm....

And it's not even in California... 😀

Yeah, I guess I should clarify that more. 🙂 In Texas (like in Cal.) we have a lot of illegal immigrants and by legal status I mean work permits, visas, temporary permits, etc.... legal status does not have to mean citizenship. its a pretty cool organization.

I suppose. Then again if you know someone is here illegally the law says that you should report it......

You should be wary though....if illegals become a significant part of the population then they will start demanding citizen's rights.

Which is BS.

Just my opinion, however.

for the unique EC, there is nothing unique except doing what you love.
i'm serious; it is not a lame answer. put in time into something that you will WANT to participate in, and you will be doing a service to yourself and your medical school application.

yea volunteering through the hospitals as a highschooler or undergrad usually isn't too productive. With all those new HIPAA regulations, I was at volunteer orientation and they were tellin all the students that you dont ask or talk to the doctors unless they specifically adress you. Also if you were in an elevator or standing at a station where doctors, nurses, etc.. might be talking about a patient or other info relatiing to a patient you were supposed to tell them code blue. Code blue was the secret password when someone is talking about HIPAA stuff around people who dont need to hear it. Thankfully, I work in a research lab in a bulding behind the main hospital so i dont have to deal with that crap.

I volunteer with an organization through my church - it's most easily put as 'a Christian version of boy scouts,' but it's a lot more than that. Anyways, I did it before college, I hope to do it after college/med school, and I enjoy doing it.

Try thinking of something you would do on your own - even if it never made it to your med school application, and then do that.

I thought that the Boy Scouts were already a "Christian" organization.

Reverence is a tenet of being a Boy Scout.....

Try founding a mentoring program for inner city kids, or teen mothers, or some other at-risk youth population.

Just put whatever you want on your application...nobody is going to check. That is what I did. According to my application I served in both Iraq wars and started an African American AIDS research fund. According to my personal statement I saved a guy's life by using an extra radiator hose and vacume line hose to stop the blood from pouring out of a shrapnel wound.

Funny you should mention that. I am actually investigating treatments and diagnostics tools for pancreatic cancer. It's great to see someone who has a keen awareness of the lethality of the disease. Over 95% of people with adenocarcinoma will die within 12 months. There is no treatment to "cure" the disease, only slow down its growth. Over 29,000 Americans will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer this year. That is a much smaller number than breat and lung cancer, but a good majority of that 29K will die.

Just a public service announcement for pancreatic cancer.

You could do some exciting international work or volunteer to improve health in soup kitchens or homeless shelters. Unite For Sight (www.uniteforsight.org) has some interesting opportunities in the U.S. and abroad.
