Hey guys!

In ortho and para case, how do we determine when we use ortho versus para?

Thanks in advance.

Ortho goes with para; it's sort of like a package deal. A substituent will either favor meta postition, or the ortho/para position. For ortho/para substituents in monosubstituted benzene rings, para is usually favored over ortho because the para position is less hindered than the ortho positions.

Take in to account what is bonded to the benzene ring. If in alkane chain I think if its over two Carbons long you get more of the para isomer. ANd if it is one carbon long (toul) you get more of the para isomer. Double check that though.
