hi ,
i know during time between D-3 and D-4 people get a chance to do externship in the field they like and get a glimse of what is going to be next. what i would like to know is , if any one has considered externship for ORTHODONTICS at any place ??? anyone has any resource on this ??

if yes, what could be the pros and cons to be considered for such an externship ??

i know i am throwing this thread in the middle of a war zone of residencies !!....GOOD LUCK TO THOSE WHO HAVE A INTERVIEW COMING UP 🙂

THANX,

Most ortho programs will tell you that they do not offer an "externship" like the ones you will find for those applying to OMFS, but you are usually more than welcome to visit the programs as you contact them and let them know when you want to visit and what your objectives for visiting are.

The ortho program at VCU is the only ortho program that I am aware of that offers a structured externship to dental students interested in ortho residency. You may want to find out a little more information on their website http://www.dentistry.vcu.edu/ortho/postgraduate/externship.html and then contact them. You will need to apply for an externship spot by sending a letter of intent, your CV, and proof of liability insurance to the program director. The VCU ortho externship is for a week duration and most peers that have done it say it is much too long. Also, one thing to consider before doing a week long externship is that you ARE being interviewed whether you know it or not and, from their impression during your visit, they may or may not like you and that could cost you an interview invitation.

I think it would be good to visit at least one ortho program outside your dental school so you can see what other programs are like. Also, it would be something that you can put on your CV.

Hope this helps! :hello:
