So I searched this forum for days and didn't find anything like this so I made this thread.
I wanted to know what are the CV and resume of those who got into ortho residency .
I know the minimum requirements like Toefl and GRE, NBDE but these are the easy ones, what did you do extra so you could get there?
I know it must be harder for me as an international student but I wanna get a grasp of what did you guys had to get in.
thanks in advance for your helps

I think the want research experience

but how much research experience are we talking about?
is it important it to be research be at cellular level? or do they look at review articles and oral presentation? or experience at orthodontic treatment?

I'm a first year resident in an ortho residency and after being on the other side of the application process, they look for a lot.

You want some type of research on your resume (doesn't have to be ortho related - they just want to see that you've done it because so many programs require you to get a Masters as well).

Be engaged in a lot of extracurriculars, but also hold positions. If you were just in a club and didn't hold a position, in my opinion it's not even worth putting on your resume. Do a lot of community service! Give kids a smile, volunteer at a soup kitchen, veterans event, etc.

Any awards and honors that you get, put as well. Including scholarships, awards from the school, deans list, etc.

Lastly, add a section about your hobbies! They want to know that you're a normal person as well and make time for yourself outside of school.

Hope this helps! Best of luck.

I talked with different residents, and it seems that orthodontics programs want at least 1 publication. Poster/oral presentations are very common in the US, so I don't think that make a lot of difference, I guess that everybody has a few poster/oral presentations. I'm an international dentist, and I'm doing research in order to have a publication and then apply.

Also, I know someone (also international) that she did dental school in her country and then AEGD and when she applied to 10 different orthodontics programs and she did not receive any calls (she has green card). So, probably research make the difference.

Any ways all CV's are different, I supposed that depend of your grades and what you have done you can be accepted or not. My personal example if that I don't have the best grades in dental school, plus that the grade system is totally different and when I converted the grades were worst (not horrible, but not the best). So, in order to have a better CV I'm doing research for a few years (I have 2 years already). My plan is apply to orthodontic in 1 year.

Yes, I think you have chance! Grades are very important, but if you put in a balance: good grades with research experience (not publication) and not good grades but more that 1 publication, I believe that both have chance to get into the program - this is my opinion, what I haven been seen so far -

As an international I think you have you apply as many programs as you can. US dentist have priority.

You mean research experience? Since you don't have the best grades in dental school plus you are international, there is nothing better that having publications, which you already have.
Are you talking about practical experience: what I heard is that orthodontics programs in combination with masters degree (which usually are the cheapest) they want student with publication or research experience. Ortho certificate (whitout any combination program) I think they prefiere practical experience.

Do your best, and apply!! You never know! 🙂

Thank you very much , I will

Get your grades and rank up as high as possible. The best programs first look at class rank as a weedout.

i'm in a good rank but the grades aren't good around B, where i study they don't believe in A 🙂
I'm trying to get 3 more papers before i be done with school
