$420k for 3-yr orthodontic residency, coming from $380k GP associate job?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Lets say a million (200k tuition, 800k lost opportunity cost)
This ends up being greater than one million when you add in cost of living and interest.

Sad we live in a world where two extra years of schooling costs 200k in tuition. What a ridiculous amount of money to charge somebody for an education.

$420,000 for JUST ortho residency...in addition to dental school debt...
definitely not- if you love ortho that much try to find a cheaper program

Would your guys’ opinions change if this was the same situation but the specialty was endo?
Yes. Endo has a much better income potential. Endos in corporate around me average $750k and Orthos average $400k. Not sure what the numbers in private are.

OP, I make the same as you and am applying to ortho this year. Do it if it’s what you love. Otherwise it’s a wash financially.

I know so many OSO orthos that are making significantly less than $400k. closer to the $250k-$350k range. These are experienced orthodontists btw, not new grads.
