Now that the merger has failed, how will this affect Osteopaths who pursue AOA residencies? As in, what are the implications for somebody who pursues AOA, wants to do a fellowship, but cannot because he or she pursued an AOA rather than Allopathic residency?

Its unknown, as the other poster mention.

It is likely that AOA residents will not be able to go on to an acgme fellowship.

There are, however, AOA fellowships. Additionally, not all fellowships are accredited by the Acgme, such as abdominal transplant, breast surgical oncology, minimally invasive & bariatic surgery, so this "failed merger" issue will not apply to these non-accredited fellowships.

Supposedly the AOA says that they will continue to have talks with the AMA to find some sort of resolution. Like you said though, most likely AOA residents won't be able to get ACGME fellowships for at least a while.
