I am conflicted in deciding between EM and FP (or even possibly IM)...I find myself really enjoying the ER environment more than private practice but I can settle for private practice

Additionally, I like OMT and as an EM doc, I would not really be able to use OMT because it is contraindicated in acute settings, and I'm certain that there is not much OMT learning in an FP residency.

I am wondering though if it was possible to do an FP residency but primarily work in the ER?

I've seen a number of docs do this and no it's not threw grandfather laws or what not. It's definately regional though and you will not be able to do this in say NYC but could probably do it in many midwest towns and subarbs.

If you like the ER and would be settling for an outpatient practice, you should do an EM residency and don't look back. And OMT is not contraindicated in ED situations. There are plenty of chronic painers who present to the ED as well as not very ill folks with aches and pains who could benefit greatly from a couple of minutes of muscle energy or even HVLA.

Depending on where you are located an FP can do ER work. Obviously as a resident your ER work will be limited, however your knowledge base is not that far off for most of the cases. If you are thinking trauma and level 1 type of ER work then go ER. If you like the bread and butter ER and would like to do OMT t hen GO FP. I am the fourth DO to go into FP in my family so I have seen the full realm of what an FP can do. I currently doing allopathic residency and doing a lot of OMT. My dad and uncles do urgent care work as well as a large FM practice in Houston. Another Fp in the group originally only did ER work then decided to go back into FP medicine.
