So I was comparing the preliminary apply to list with the EMRA database and found that some of the programs I was interested in had no DOs in the program, and didn't have any DOs in the program for the past 5 years...

Some of the names on that list: Denver Health, U of Arizona, U of New Mexico...also WashU and Ohio State. Many other programs from Akron General to OHSU to Cincy didn't list information on that site.

While my perfect world runs as a meritocracy, I realize that reality tends to diverge from that ideal fairly often. So is it even worth wasting money on an app to such places? Or is it simply a fools errand?

I probably wouldn't waste the money. You have to figure a place like Denver is pretty much taking the people it wants most years so you have to figure that for the last 5 years that hasn't been any DOs.

Lord knows there are plenty of DOs on the trail and if Denver would have wanted one of them...

Denver has had 1. Akron definitely has them if you look at there list along with summa and st vincent's in ohio. If you looking around ohio, I also might suggest wright state.

Most of the residency programs in northern ohio (Metro, Summa, AGMC, St. V's) have DO's in them. AGMC and St. V's tend to be more DO friendly, but all 4 programs have DO's.

Not sure about those south of here, (OSU, Wright St, Cincy), but the northern half of the state is definately more DO friendly than the southern.

There's also a fair number of excellent DO EM residencies in the state of Ohio.

It's not that much money, really.

There aren't that many of us out there, so I don't think that every program without any recent DO residents is automatically evil and biased. It drives me crazy to see other DO students preemptively counting themselves out without trying. (Don't get me started on the "I'm only taking the COMLEX because if they don't accept it they must hate DOs" meme). What have you got to lose by applying?

I am mostly applying to program that have had DOs at some point (either currently or in the past). Most of the programs that are geographically located where I would like to be happen to have DOs. I have considered Denver and U of NM though and may still apply to them.

I think that if you are truly interested in a program and are a competitive applicant, you should go for it. Someone has to be the first, right?

I think that a lot of DO students shy away from programs that don't have DOs because they think that the program in not DO friendly. Therefore, even fewer DOs apply to those programs than others.

I agree, you should apply anywhere if you feel that you're a competitive candidate. I considered applying to NM also, even though they told some applicants that they will not accept a DO candidate.

Also, I've found that some of the programs erroneously list 0 DO's now/5 years, when on their own sites they list several DOs. Not saying that your programs are like that, just saying you might want to verify if possible.

I would definitely just apply where you want. when i was in the process i did the exact same thing as far as looked at programs that had DO's and if some didnt list a DO then or in the past 5 years i actually called them to ask why. some of them told me they just dont get very many applicants. and a lot of times websites dont list who is a DO and just put MD. It can't hurt to ask. also, at hopkins 5 years ago there were no DO's. when i applied there was only one...and now we have 4. so you never know u could be the one to turn things around where ever you end up. i have hear that places like duke, vandy, unc dont take DO's but i have not heard of denver or cinci...i just think they are extremely competitive regardless what your degree is...and that could play a role.
good luck

unc actually has 2 DO's one in pgy1 and pgy 3 both from same school though. And one of their affiliated hospitals wakemed has DOs on faculty.

FWIW, a DO seems to match at Denver General every 3-4 years or so. I believe that the only DO there now is graduating this year (so you're definitely in!).
Personally I'd apply to the places you are interested in, definitely with some less competitive programs mixed in, but don't not apply to a place where you think you'd love to end up.

Akron general's program director is a DO, and have some DO residents.
Akron City's (Summa) hospital also has DO residents
Cleveland clinic has a DO residency
Ohio state has a DO this year from OUCOM
Denver is not DO friendly (esp if you are a female and DO... just my experience)
Don't know too much about cincy, ariz, or UNM
Definitely apply to any program you are intersted in regardless if they have DO residents or not, especially if it's somewhere you really want to go! That's what I am doing :luck:

Based on what I've seen at the hospital and the listing on the EM department's web site, there are no DO residents in EM at University Hospital in Cincinnati. There is 1 DO who is an assistant professor and an attending at an affiliated hospital.

I have seen a few DO's in other residency programs at University Hospital.
