There seems to be quite a bit of conflicting information out there regarding applying for a D.O. dermatology residency. Does it differ from allopathic programs in that you first do an internship then apply afterward for dermatology residency? Or is it like M.D. programs in which you simultaneously apply for transition year and residency during fourth year? I can't seem to find this information anywhere on the AOA or AOCD website.
All the best.

This thing is a mess and as I understand it, every program is different. I can only speak of a couple of places, but the problem seems to come from a source of funding. In the Allo world all the derm spots are funded just like any other spot; you get X amount of funding for each spot for Y number of years. The program gets a cut and the resident gets a salary and a guarantee that they will have a place to learn for the next few years. In the DO world not all programs are structured like this. As an example, Broward General in FL will only accept people who have already completed a residency in a primary care field (FM,IM), and you only get a very small salary (like 15k a year or something). However, the Naples program accepts people after an intern year only. Also, I don't think that any DO Derm program goes through the match, thus its up to you to contact the programs directly to apply.

It seems that the only way to really find anything out is to contact the programs directly. You can find them on Osteopathic Opportunities.

I think there are only a few programs that want you to complete a residency first (like Broward) and then 1, maybe 2 where the derm residency is more of a fellowship after FP/IM (but you're still BC by the AOCD). It's my understanding that most derm residencies are classified by the AOA as a type 3 (err whatever) program where you apply during your internship. It's my understanding that this means two sets of applications (one for internship, one later one for residency) and also that (unlike ACGME) you do not know where/if you will get a derm spot after internship. I'd honestly probably try to talk to individual programs though.

Go to the AOCD website...look at that and then make sure you contact all the programs you are interested in....most want you to have an internship before the residency...what school are you currently at?
