I'm wondering if anyone here has any information about clinical electives and research as an osteopathic student. I'm particularly interested in knowing roughly how many weeks/blocks you can do of research as an Osteopathic student and any other associated knowledge about these (links, etc.).

don't you think this will vary greatly depending on which school you go to?

At my school, 3rd year rotations are set. 4th year you get to choose 2 Surgical Selectives, 2 Medical Selectives, and then 4 Electives. All are 4 weeks. There is also an EM rotation required, and a required research/scholarly activity rotation.

Yes, but I'm wondering in general terms if this is something usual at osteopathic schools.

It depends on the school. In general, you'll have 1 elective during your 3rd year and anywhere from 2 to 12 electives during your 4th year. I had 6 electives during my 4th year. You can do whatever you want during your elective months, including research.

You can pretty much rotate at any hospital that will take you. Most places will take DOs for electives/research.

Your school may limit the number of electives you can do in one specific speciality. For example, your school may say you can only do two months of research or two months of urology or whatever. My school didn't have any restrictions, but I've heard some schools, md and Do, do have restrictions.

That's pretty sweet. Is there a known advantage or disadvantage to doing research vs. clinical electives?

You lose clinical knowledge and do not progress your clinical skills if you do too much research. Having published research helps for residency, but isn't required.
