Osteopathic EM programs

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think it's a mix of those two things. Supposedly in the class of 2012 at my school a few guys had the same thing happen(folks promising them a spot and falling for it and not matching)

Haha, okay... so lessons for matching EM:
-Rank everyone
-Don't listen when they tell you not to bother ranking anyone else
-Don't rank non-EM

Sums it up, right?

Again, I'll direct you to the source I cited, page 7. Like I said, it's hard to figure out from just the numbers what happens to that other 30%

Yeah... I have seen the numbers but I don't know how to interpret them. I could believe ~30 people not matching into anything for various reasons.

Agree with applying wide and attending all interviews. Who knows *shrug*

Lol. DO was the best decision I've made in the last decade...

As an FYI for everyone...one program I recently interviewed at told me they have gotten about 350 apps for an entering class of <10, and of the 350, they only interview 20%. I will definitely be ranking every place I get interviewed.

Again, I'll direct you to the source I cited, page 7. Like I said, it's hard to figure out from just the numbers what happens to that other 30%, but I do hope you're right, and that these are just people who rank a couple of AOA programs they really like before moving on to ACGME. From that fifth set of bullet points in my post, it looks like there were about 200 DO's who did both matches last year. While EM isn't a huge portion of the match overall, it does make sense that a disproportionate fraction of those 200 are applying to EM, as a chance to be out of residency a year earlier is a pretty hefty incentive above and beyond what most DO students are looking for in the ACGME world.

Question is, though, does that account for everyone? That's 103 who didn't match in 2011. Assume a couple of them got the two empty spots in the scramble, and another 15-20 went into the FM-EM/IM-EM programs. Still about 75 unaccounted for, and in 2011 it looks like only 64 did both matches (it looks like there were 950 who either withdrew or did not submit a rank list, so presumably they successfully matched AOA and are not the droids we're looking for). Even if EM is over-represented, how high of an estimate are we willing to say for those guys, when EM is 9% of AOA positions and 7% of ACGME positions? I mean, let's be generous and say 15. Still leaves about 50 that applied EM with no other place to land. I hope this group is composed of people who were undecided about their specialty, and that they are happy in another specialty.

And frankly, unless you're a rockstar with tons of options, I'd rank everywhere you could reasonably expect to rank you (i.e. interviews). Maybe you thought the program was ****ty, but unless it's ****tier than the prospect of scrambling into an FM residency in BFE, it's better to have it at the bottom of your list than not.

Last year my program lost a few people from out top ten. We had a couple people who applied but were in the Military and did not get their deferment, we had one who went to the MD match, and we had one who decided against EM as a specialty and matched into IM.

Place I'm at now got 550+ applications, interviewing <50, for a class <6. Good times. I wouldn't consider turning down/canceling interviews unless I get 15+ or I run out of money to travel.

Lots of overlapping dates for Michigan programs... will end up doing multiple interviews per day

So to breathe some humanity back into this thread... man, if you haven't tried to explain Chapman's Points to an MD attending at 4 AM to kill time on a slow shift, you haven't lived. XD

Lots of overlapping dates for Michigan programs... will end up doing multiple interviews per day

Seriously this makes interviewing very difficult. Dates are only offered on Wednesdays for most programs and when there are so few dates it only compounds the scheduling difficulties. For out of state interviews is it acceptable to ask for a program to make an exception for an interview date? So that you dont have to make multiple trips to the same area for separate programs?

Okay, so question about PCOM/St Luke's...

They're not listed as Dual-Accredited, but they do have an ACGME residency attached. I guess they're just parallel programs (different directors, etc).

However, according to the AOA section of the website, they only rank students in the NRMP.

Is this accurate? It seems a little ridiculous for an AOA program to not use NMS. Though now I'm debating registering for NRMP before it's too late, even if that's a bit of a Hail Mary...

I was wondering about that as well. I also have to admit I don't understand programs being parallel rather than dual. They obviously have the capability of having dual accreditation... what is the advantage to being parallel instead?

I think some of the small programs (eg: taking 2 residents) and new programs mention they offer this in their interview invite emails. Already looking at 3 days with double interviews here, luckily not having to drive more than 2 hours away so not a big deal.

Guys, I only have 6 interviews set up as of now, is that a very low number for this point in the cycle? Will the programs listed above send out another round of invitations or do they just do this once/cycle? I applied to 32 programs. Thanks.

Supposedly you need 12-15 interviews to be "safe" but out of your six how many of them are courtesy from rotation? Are they all high tier places or ones you think you have a reasonable shot at matching?

Also it seems like they send out a second wave after people decline interviews.

I would have a safety speciality in mind as well.

3 are at places I'm rotating... all are realistic so far but they're all smaller programs which makes me somewhat nervous. The one I'm at currently is so small that they don't interview anyone without an audition rotation. I'll obviously rank everyone that interviews me, 15 of my programs do not yet appear on the above list so that means they've yet to send out invites that we know of, correct? Hoping if I get 6 from the first half of my programs and another 5 or 6 from the other 15 I'll be ok. I wouldn't mind doing EM/IM or FM/EM if needed but sure would like to avoid that if possible!

This may be one time smaller may be better. If you are shining like a rock star they will probably rank you highly. The main thing is will the program give you the skills to be a competent EP? Are their graduates passing their oral and written boards on the first attempt? Also be sure to look up the EM/IM places you want to apply. Two of them have appeared to close.

are people actually ranking EM/IM programs as a "backup"? i was under the impression those were more difficult to get into. maybe not?

I think some people are but it's not cakewalk. The curriculum is brutal at some of the places I looked but you'll be a very well rounded doc. Some of the openings last year were in EM/IM if I remember correctly(marietta oh).

how many programs did y'all apply to?

Was going to do 12 programs but went with 25 after taking the earlier advice of applying broad and canceling later if needed... Ended up with 19 interviews with a possible couple more programs to hear from.

Most people I have met at interviews only applied at 5-10 places. The SDN effect :scared:

9 for 16 so far. 3 places I applied to are still blue on the list, and I made the mistake of applying to the Oklahomas without a rotation so I've written those off.

Hopefully this advice is not too late, but show your face at as many programs as you can!!! I can't tell you how many candidates we interview didn't think to come shadow for a day or just hang out in the ED after their interview.... Obviously, you can't rotate at every program you apply to, but with so many applicants for so few spots, many places only interview a handful of people that didn't rotate with them. When I did 2 months of audition rotations in Michigan as a student I spent 58 days in an ED. When I was off from my actual rotation I was shadowing at another program. 4 PD's told me straight up, that they wouldn't have interviewed me if I didn't show my face at their shop.

So according to my interview this morning, St. Joseph's Paterson is now dual-accredited. Was very confused to see an MD student in my interview group, but I guess they just got that as of September. Cool stuff...

maybe... maybe not. I just looked and they indeed pop up under the "MD" program search but they say on their website and everything that I can find that they are AOA accredited but I can't find one mention of ACGME, ABEM, or anything like that. It also says they are a "1-3 program after finishing an approved osteopathic internship year" which, to me, means 1-4. If they had an MD candidate there then hard to argue it but not sure how they can say they are dual accredited when their website says they aren't unless this is something so absolutely recent that it hasn't even been updated on the website (and September doesn't fall into that criteria for me) but who knows...

This was directly from the program director, and was echoed by many other throughout the day. They probably just haven't updated the website yet, but I Promise you this is 100% accurate. Big boost for the program, even though they were really good to begin with. Said they plan on offering four spots through NMS and two through NRMP.

Jedi is correct. This was told to me via the program coordinator and I asked could I apply to the MD side with Comlex only(due to those interview dates working out better) and they told me nope need the usmle.

Resident at St. Joe's here. We are dual-accredited starting this cycle. Look forward to seeing all you applicants!
