South Pointe interview

Also got an email from Affinity medical center in Massilon Ohio. They have a separate program but are part of a northeast Ohio consortium. Apparently, when you apply to South Pointe, you get considered for a couple of other places. Weird.

Holy heck, thank you for mentioning this. I got that email on Sunday and just went, "Oh, another rejection? Delete." I went back and reread it and am like, "Yes please!"

Glad you didnt' miss out on an interview opportunity. The email came at a really weird time too, like nearly 1 in the morning for me. I was kind of irritated at the time cause I was in Philly for COMLEX PE and my phone alert woke me up.

Anyone already make a list of programs that require rotating internship vs. direct match PGYI? I know I can go into the opportunities site and click on each one to find out but I figured it would save some time if someone already did that.

Just in case anyone was curious, Comanche County called me today for interview. Their dates are Dec 3, 10, and 17th. They are also trying to have 'skype' interview days as well.

Invite from PBCGME/Port St. Lucie. Sounds like they interview rotators only; heard it's the same with the other Florida program.

That's not totally true. I know of three folks from my school interviewing at Mount Sinai(myself included) without rotations.

Well, then I stand corrected. I'll have to drop them a line...

Is there any reason osteopathic EM residencies are 4 years and most allopathic residencies are 3 years? Could this change anytime soon?

Because osteopathic residencies must incorporate the TRI rotations into their curriculum. (Surgery, Medicine, Pediatrics, etc) The only way to accomplish this is by adding another year. However you do have more months of ER experience at the end.

This won't be changing anytime soon. There are also quite a few 4 yr ACGME programs, with more in the works.

Well, got the ol' kick in the balls today from Doctors Hospital in Columbus, OH. Didn't make the rank list. They were going to be my #1.
Gonna get back to crying into my beer now.

I was just wondering with the email sent out today for the program, did they send variations. "Will be ranked"/"Will be ranked competitively"/"Will be ranked very competitively"

Is 560 a competitive score for Osteopathic EM?

Damn, seemed like you got interviews invites all over place too.... Surprised and sorry to hear that.

Competitive for basically everything except a few of the surgical sub-specialties.

I'm over it. It seemed like a solid program, but location was the biggest reason I had the at the top. It is a bit frustrating since I dropped my MD interviews based on the perception that I was competitive for my top two DO choices and would match thusly. It was just a surprise as my app seemed to be pretty solid and I've gotten good feedback elsewhere. I don't know if it's a testament to the competitiveness this year, or just the randomness of the whole process.

Quick question. I just scheduled my PE exam for November of 2014. I'll be applying in 2015. Do programs require your PE results prior to interview? Or just that you pass prior to starting?

Taken and passed prior to rol deadline.

So does this mean as long as I pass I'll be okay? Or am I screwed? The dead line is January 31st right?

Im taking it November 13th. So Results should be Janunary 13th-28th. Will they already have knocked me from their list if they don't by have it then?

Doctor's Hospital creates their rank list the first week of December...other EM programs do the same. If I were you, I would be hunting for an earlier date. Someone who has passing scores on both parts will automatically be bumped over anyone who does not yet have passing scores.

Anyone apply or interview at Vineland EM program in NJ? If so how was it? Do they have any residents there?

Even if it's just the PE? I'll have dates before they have to submit. Any advice on how to change it? It's the earliest date currently available.

spots will open. Look weekly. My school advises us to take it by Oct. 1st because it sometimes takes the full 8 weeks to get a score back. Take a deep breath man it's very early in the game.

They pretty much confirmed this for me when I contacted them. It's not an absolute requirement, but it definitely seems like you're at disadvantage not having a complete file at the time of the decision. It's unfortunate since many people probably don't know going into the application season that some places make their decision really early and they could get hung out to dry while waiting the eleventy seven weeks for comlex scores to be reported.

2 hard lessons I've learned from this application and interview process:
1. have your file completely complete as early as possible
2. If you have a white dress shirt, always double check to make sure you packed an undershirt. Visible nipples are a stressor you don't need.

Has anyone interviewed at Newark Beth Israel yet? I want to know what the interview day will be like.

Does anyone know if Port St. Lucie or St. Barnabas are doing interviews in January? I just got an invite for the TRI at both sites (Jan 3rd for St. Lucie, Jan 2nd is an option for St. Barnabas), so I'm going to be in the area so to speak.

No ideal but Port St. Lucie requires a rotation to interview.

In PSL right now. I believe their last set of interviews were today. A handful of the current residents are former TRIs here, and three of the current TRIs are interviewing, so it does put you in a favorable position with the program provided you aren't a jerk/*****.

because audition rotation months are limited, do a lot of you try and shadow for at least one day at several ER programs? would shadowing a day really make a big difference?

and with an average comlex score, what would my chances for the EM/IM programs out there?

True that St. Luke's Bethlehem & Lehigh Valley are considered two of the "top" AOA EM progs? And why?

Hmmm idk. It's regional I think,in the south the Oklahoma programs are considered the "best", in the East I agree it's LVH is what I have always heard, in the Midwest I hear doctors and sparrow.

Hi,

I need an easy 4th year emergency medicine rotation (required by my school) at OUCOM/Doctors Hospital or St. John Providence (Warren, MI). I'm looking for easy/flexible hours so I can get time off to visit nearby sites at either location for informal audition. Should I go with OUCOM/Doctors Hospital or St. John Providence? Thank you!

You have several post very similar to this one? Why are you posting so many ? Are you interested in EM?

I'm not interested in EM at all; I'm interested in ENT. I didn't get good responses from my previous posts and I figure people on this thread can answer my question better. Thank you.

You need to make that decision. No one rotation experience will be similar for students, since it all depends on which residents/attending you end up working with. Even at my base, one student's "easy" month was another student's "hell" month.

So this has been asked and answered before but I'm looking for an update given the increased competitiveness of EM. How many programs does the average applicant have to apply to in order to secure the magic 10 interview number? By average student I mean around 500 comlex, average grades, no flags, no crazy extracurriculars.

I fit that profile and interviewed at 8 places. I had rotated at three. Applied to maybe 25-30, based on geographic preference.

I would focus on getting a level 2 of 550 and higher. Also auditions are a big deal, a michigan program with an average of 470-480 even told me with my score i wouldn't get an invite without a rotation.

Some MI places are huge with auditions. Others it seems that if you like the place you might have to pick up a couple shifts to have a shot. I would say that the audition rotations are more important than boards.

I have some vacation time early 4th year. Maybe I'll take a drive around michigan. Then again, that might be too gunner for my blood and I might just take my chances.

If you have all of the things above, your normal, work hard, get along with others, and are friendly. You'll need maybe 3-5 interviews with some of those being auditions at places your interested. You'll get more probably, but you won't necessarily "need" them.

(This is all IMO, since I have yet to match)

A little off-topic, but I can't seem to find who to contact to set up an away rotation at Albert Einstein and St. Barnabas. Any help? Thanks!

What is your opinion based on here? Just curious. Thanks.

Myself and a good number of my peers doing EM that had good scores (550+) all got good vibes from programs (calls or emails). My sample size is pretty small and I still haven't matched so take that for what it's worth of course. I just think that the rotation is the most important part.

Agree about the student rotation importance but the letters/calls are 50-50.

The place I was initially ranking one(but they dropped to #3 after a few interviews at other places) said your one of the best we have ever had you'll match here or wherever you want, got calls from the faculty as well and I found out I'm not even in the top set of folks to match (got the likely to match version instead of the very/extremely likely that others did)

Agree with this. I was fortunate to get a large number of interviews and was told by multiple places the same line of highly likely to match, will match anywhere I want etc mentioned. Turns out many of my friends have gotten identical lines from the same places. Only one place I know of will call you to really press and gauge your interest and will adjust their ROL accordingly, no surprise they never go deep on their list.

To be honest I'm not sure a huge number of interviews or impressive application will greatly increase chance of matching DO because it seems like most places put a huge emphasis on rotating. Basically if you rotate it's your spot to lose assuming your application is at least average. Only one of 15 established programs I interviewed at seemed to place little importance on rotating.
