I'm trying to decide between an MD school and a DO school, but someone told me that MD schools only have 5% of students not match into residencies, while osteopathic students have 20% not match into residencies. Is this true?

Sorry, if this has already been asked. I have to make a quick decision, and I've been unable to find anything. Thanks!

Per the last report I looked at, 99% of DOs find a first year training position. I will need to dig it up, it was in either a COCA or AOA official position statement regarding the unified match if I remember correctly.

Thanks. Do you know if this includes people that were trained in a "traditional year"... Whatever that is.

If you have the choice to go MD, do it. You shouldn't even have to think about it.

This year the acgme match rate for USMDs was 94.4%, 77.7% for DOs, and 53% for Caribbean graduates.

The AOA match rate this year was 71%.

However, even with a 77% acgme match rate and a 71% AOA match rate, the vast majority of DOs (95%+) will find a post graduate training position.

Go to the US MD school.

Dude if you have an MD acceptance, just take that.

It does, but what can't be taken into account is how many of those TY spots are voluntary vs involuntary due to going unmatched. Anyway, go MD if you can obviously. DO isn't a death knell for your career, but it's a harder road.

I'm interested in primary care, live in a region with little DO bias and am interested in learning OMM. I felt more comfortable and have a better gut feeling about the DO school.
If you want to do primary care, you will 100% match. Don't worry about it. If you truly have an interest in OMM, DO isn't a bad option for you.

EDITED: If anyone would rather go to an MD school because of those two letters, they should make every effort to do so.

Some people are actually psyched about DO, and would love not to have the seat wasted by someone who is just going to graduate with an inferiority complex.

I can promise you that DO schools don't have a 5% match rate let alone in primary care. We had a fabulous match list the last two years from my alma mater from people matching in FM in UC schools to Duke. If you are truly interested in osteopathy, take the DO route, learn the OMM to make you a niche practitioner and enjoy the ride!

I believe it. The search button stops working when it sees the 680134th MD v. DO thread.

And yes, it is true.

I didn't read this before my last response. It sounds like you really have answered your own question, then. You want to learn something that this school teaches, you felt better about it, and it gets you where you want to go.

Don't let the MD-biased SDN sway you. It doesn't matter if that stat was correct, it won't affect you if you are going into primary care.

You may have a better chance matching as a DO actually. If you fail the COMLEX and repeat, you'll likely still find a FM spot somewhere. Fail the USMLE as an MD you are completely screwed. This may change with the merger

Sorry for the dumb question but if you sign up with Uncle Suger (Military, Hospital corp, etc.) during med school, are you "guaranteed" a match?

No. They will find work for you, though. I know someone who was told he had to do a 1 year internship and then work as a general medical officer. That was 3 years ago and he still hasn't done a residency.

Wow - what is this guy's deal? Well maybe he enjoys what he is doing. I wonder if he even qualifies for a medical license in the state he practices in. I see countless ad's for physician jobs on USAJOBS.com for the VA and several health officer positions that have nice pay rates.

That scenario apparently happens a lot to people who signed up for the HPSP scholarship.

If Uncle Sam owns you, he'll use you. Where and how is a different question.

NOT true at my school!
