Hi guys,

I am really interested in osteopathic medicine. I have been shadowing a DO for the past 1 1/2 year and he is an amazing phycisian. Any way, my question is does anyone happen to have information about Osteopathic medicine being practiced internationally. Can a DO practice in another country? specifically, India. just trying to gather all facts incase if I want to go out of the country for a yr or two or do rotations somewhere else. any way thanks..i hope someone can direct me to the answer.....good luck to everyone

Most countries recognize DO's now, but there are still a few who don't. Check with the AOA for your specific question if nobody on SDN has an answer for you.

There is a list of countries that recognize DOs as MD equivalents, some only as equivalents to chiropractors and some that don't recognize them.

I remember reading a list on a thread in the Osteopathic Forum about a week ago but couldn't find it when trying to point you to it. Search there and you might have better luck.

The AOA received a response to its 1998 inquiry regarding licensure of US-trained DOs. The Medical Council of India stated that osteopathic medicine degree is not recognized for the purpose of IMC Act, 1956. However, they did state that a DO might apply after getting Indian nationality and after implementation of screening test Regulation/Provision in the Indian Medical Council Act.

I'll make a bold statement that within my lifetime there will be many changes to international practices or even the ability to sit for that nations board exams. The professon has come a long way over the last 20 years....just imagine the next 20.
