Would Dr. Mom, Idiopathic, or any one else from OSU-COM be willing to give interview advice or tell about thier interview experience at OSU to a hopeful? Thanks, any help is appreciated.

I have an interview at OSU-COM on Thursday Oct. 30. When is yours _456?

10/31/03 (friday).

sorry, but didn't you see that when you posted your date on the interview thread?

are you nervous/anxious? (I am.)

any idea when we could find out...either way?

btw good luck.

I'm a little nervous, but I've visited the campus a few times and they seem to be very laid back. I'm just reviewing some of my application materials and praying that the stars will align. I don't know how long the wait will be, but I have been told that they interview from the top applicants downward. We are among the first to run the gauntlet. No need to get ulcers worrying about it. Good luck.

I'm here for you...dont sweat it, first of all. Second, be prepared to talk about what primary care means to you. We specialize in 'primary care', which, if you dont know, includes: FP, peds, OB, ER and IM. So, there is quite a bit in there. You can plan something out ("I want to go into ER because...") or you can just do what I did ("The thought of being the 'family doc' is one that appeals to me..."). Whether or not this is true is really not the point. Also, be prepared to discuss holistic/osteopathic philosophy. Not in depth, but have an idea of what 'treat the whole person' means. Be prepared to talk about your favorite/least favorite classes and why you liked/disliked them. Overall, come off as a quality individual who can carry a conversation, and you should do great. Let me know if you want me to stop in on your interview. It would be nice to place some faces with some names. If you havent interviewed yet anywhere, just be prepared and dont stress out. Most of all, be yourself.

p.s. i am sure that you have heard all of this before, but it is all i have to offer🙂

That is true, for the most part. There are some people who are not finished with apps yet (i didnt finish mine until december). You can relax knowing that a high % of interviewees are offered acceptance. Most of the weeding out comes during the pre-screening.

yeah ya'll are right, just got to calm down and rember to relax.

thanks for posting idiopathic. I saw the numbers on the website and about 50% of those interview enrolled the following fall, do you know if the numbers have change since that class? and yeah this is my first interview (hopefully only medical interview, that be awesome) beside the pre-med committee interview at undergrad.

ad_sharp,
I've visited the campus couple times also and I agree they do seem to be very laid back and very very nice...by far my choice for several reasons, what about you? care to say where else you are applying? as for me OSU, OU, and UHS....possibly St. George's.

Don't forget to post your interview experience, Thursay night. 😉

btw when did you get your phone call, got mine last thursday (oct 16). I would have interview same day as you but I got a test so I was able to Friday.

"I have been told that they interview from the top applicants downward. We are among the first to run the gauntlet."

that is pretty cool.
I wonder if they made a mistake with me, or has the applicant pool just declined? either way I am just happy/nervous to interview.

Dont be so nervous...they wouldnt interview you if you didnt have a shot to get in. Your numbers are put aside now, so just impress them with how dedicated/smart/charming/good-looking/rich😉 you are.

I got my call on the same day as yours. I am applying to OSU and OU only. In state tuition is keeping me where I belong. I have lived at OU Health Sciences Center for a couple of months over this past summer doing research at the Dean McGee Eye Institute, so I am very familiar with their program/campus. Even so, my gut tells me that OSU is the right place for me to be. I like the philosophy and everything seems to be very student-oriented. I am also a married man, so my wife has as much input as I do in where we will live these next few years. I know that many of OSU's students are married and/or have kids. I don't want to be the only person in this boat when school comes around. Btw, what are your stats (GPA, MCAT, ect.)? and where do you go to school? I go to Southeastern Oklahoma State University and double major in Chemistry and Biology. My MCAT is 32P and Gpa is 4.0. I'm just trying to size up the competition. We may be classmates in less than a year.

Hey, good to see some more fellow Oklahoma applicants. Good luck guys!

Hey, guys. I just saw this thread .

Idiopathic is giving you good info. The interviews here are almost always quite laid back and converstational. The end of October dates are the first interviews this year (in the past they started mid-Oct) so you're in good shape. They do like to hear that you have some kind of interest in primary care &/or rural medicine (they want you to at least be open to the idea). You also need to have some concept of the philosphy of osteopathic medicine.

The interviews are usually about 30 minutes with a DO and a PhD at the same time. They will also have a couple of informational sessions (fin aid, etc) and a lunch and campus tour with a couple of current students.

As to being family friendly, OSU is. Both Idiopathic & I have kiddos and spouses, as do quite a few of our classmates.

Feel free to PM or email me if you have any specific questions. I'll try to make a point to drop in and say hi on your interview day. 😀

First congratulations on your stats. I will just say that the numbers are higher than mine and that I have only one major and no research experinece. I am from southeast oklahoma, a little north east of SOSU.

btw what do you think of sosu double major program, do you think it had enough chemistry? did you have to do a research project or thesis? just wanting to know b/c i have a little sister who might be interested in the program. I wish i would have know about it before I started college, I might have went to Durant, (would have looked better to have double major than the signle when the degree requirment are so similar to mine now.) thanks.

I think it is better not to think competition, even though I understand what you mean and was curious about your stat just the same.

oh I added UHS, not b/c I can afford but b/c there are programs to pay for it or take loans to go to med school somewhere than not at all. Plus it looks like a good school with the intergrated curriculm, only negative for me is Kansas City and the class size.

Does any none if OSU takes into consideration which part of the state your from?

How are the case-studies? at OSU during the second year?

Does OSU still use the spiraling method (cont. reintroducing material at a greater depth) to teach?

Thanks.

At SOSU, there is two options if you are a double major. First, you can be interdisciplnary which means that you lack 1 class in both subjects short of being a "full major". It's 38 hours for biology and chemistry. Second you can be a full double major by taking some math and those extra classes. That's what I've done. I figured it would be worth it to just take a few extra classes. If your sister is interested in attending, she needs to call and contact the honors program office. They issue a large number of very good scholarship. I have benefitted from one myself. If she is planning on attending next year, she needs to start thinking about her application. SOSU has a good program (Especially the brandspankin new biology dept.), but it is small. I had a whopping 5 people in my histology class, but that gives you a lot of one on one with the PhD teaching. The upper division courses in chemistry have only six to ten students on average. This appealed to me, so that's where I chose to go. Also, Human anatomy is taught using real cadavers. I have dissected two of them for the lab working as the lab TA. I think that it may be a little harder to get experience of this type at a larger school. Going to a smaller school probably puts more weight on my MCAT than GPA, but I feel that I have received a very good undergrad education.

SOSU sounds good for her, small class, etc.... I especially like the fact that they use real cadvers in hum. ant. my sister is a junior in HS so she still has a year to make a decsion. thanks for the infomation.

great stats ad =), gl with your interviews, and do that interview feedback thing that SDN has 😀, ill be applying next year =).

for a better chance at acceptance, drop $20-$40 into each of the MSIV mailboxes. 😎

~88 MS-IV's * $20 = $1760

Have to wait for a student loan, unless, does anyone want to buy a kindey from a 20 year old male, good health, with type A positive blood?

🙂

Excellent...this case-based learning realy helps reinforce the teaching. DR. Goljan is actually better than I thought he would be.

Does OSU still use the spiraling method (cont. reintroducing material at a greater depth) to teach?

Dear God, do we ever...but it adds to the overall knowledge base. I find that for some tests, I really dont even have to study certain things, since we have been over them so often. That is probably the intended effect.

I agree with Idiopathic, once again. and, no, I don't always agree with him! 😉

And don't bother paying off the 4th years...they're barely ever around. The second years are who you want to get good with! 😀

On a more serious note, as to the question about which part of the state you're from: I really don't think that is a major factor in selection (if it is one at all).

Dont let her fool you...even on the few times where she doesnt agree with me, she knows that she should!!😀

I just spotted this thread (I don't make it over to the Pre-Osteo forum much) and thought I would add my two cents.

Here's what I remember from my interview. It was a lot more laid back than I expected (the interview with my premed committee at my undergrad school was a ton more intense). I remember that my interviewers asked me what I thought the practical differences are between osteopathic and allopathic physicians. That was a little tough.

Also, they asked me how I would feel about practicing in a rural area. I mentioned the fact that I spent part of my childhood in a rural area (Antlers, to be exact, not terribly far from Durant) and that I had pleasant memories from it and would not be opposed to spending some more time in a similar area. It's not as if you have to commit to spending the rest of your life in a town of 300 people during the interview, just don't tell the interviewers that you wouldn't be caught dead in a town of less than 100,000 people. 😀

Be sure and have some questions for the interviewers at the end of your time together. Even if all your questions have been answered already by other people, ask the interviewers the same questions (they don't know everything that you heard during the day), just to appear interested. Also, remember one of your interviewers will be a basic science professor, so try to come up with a question or two that he/she will be able to answer.

Good luck and if you have any more questions, post them or PM me.

I got really lucky with my interview here. 90% of the conversation revolved around Cardinal baseball and drinking Guinness. The other 10% dealt with my willingness to remain in Oklahoma after graduation. Somehow I came up with a pretty clever on-the-spot response. 😀

Hey guys,
I think that I have heard somewhere that this interview will be closed-file. Does anyone know for sure? Also, if it is closed, should I bring up my gpa or mcat since these numbers will probably work to my advantage, or should I just go with the flow to avoid the appearance of showing off?

Hey, I wanted to say hi to the OSU students and interviewees. I'll be there this week with you all. Good luck in preparation and in the interviews. This is what we have been waiting for, enjoy it. I'm so glad that it feels like we have done all this for a reason.

Congratulations on the interviews, _456 and ad_sharp.

p.s. If anyone has any other advice, please share.

I'm pretty sure mine was open file. They referred to something I put in my AACOMAS essay.

I think I remember OSU saying at med extrangaza that it is closed file as in no mcat or gpa during the interview and on letter of rec if they mention numbers it is marked out, but after they evaluated you they are allowed to see your score and there is something about everything ( mcat, gpa, interview, experience, etc..) being scored on deciding weather to admit or not.

oh as far when i asked about if they take into consideration what part of the state you are from, i knew they did somewhat b/c they kept mention nw okla being example of rural area they like to admitted from, I was just wondering if anyone could elborate on it? esp. what they think about se okla?

not sure how reliable this information is.

btw congrations kwooder.

I'd go with what they told you. They did have some info, though.

I truly do not think that they prefer one part of the state over another. I don't think that there are a ton of applicants from nw ok, so maybe that's where the statement came from.

I believe what OSU meant was that there is NOT a lot from NW and they like to admit students from there so maybe they will return there for practice.

As far as the file yeah some info, but do not know numbers until after interview.

agian I am just going from memory from what I *think* I heard last year. I could be compeletely WRONG.

What you're saying sounds about right. I wouldn't worry about the interview here. Let me know if you have any question, though...and I'll try to make a point to stop by and say hi to all of you. 😀

I was reading this and I realized that I live very close to SOSU. I am down here at MSC in Tishomingo.

I have a friend who is a pre-law at SOSU and in the honors program and she loves it.

SOSU is a really good school, however it would take alot for me to go there since they won't accept O-Chem credits from junior colleges. ECU will accept it so that is probably where I well be headed in a year(even though their premeds histroically bomb the MCAT.)

Anyways.............................
