On the phone OSU told me that they don't have a preference for state residents. Looking at their numbers, this is a little hard to believe. What do you guys think?

On another Ohio note, does anyone know if Toledo's first essay (explain extenuating circumstances pertinant to app) is optional?

I'm surprised about the no in-state preference thing. I always thought that schools that receive state funding have to take a certain percentage of state residents. Well, if they don't have a preference, that's good news for me, since they sent me a letter explaining why they don't consider me a resident 🙄.

RE: Toledo... yes, the first essay is optional. Only #3 is mandatory, plus #2 if MD/PhD

Thanks for the reply - sorry to hear about your no residency thing, I have a few problems about that myself.

Yeah, that's what I get for trying to be all financially independent in another state for a couple years 🙄.

u mean OHSU right..i wasn't aware OSU had a medical school...

Pretty sure he means theOhio State University (tOSU) Buckeyes. They do in fact have a medical school. As for numbers, it actually seems about equal to my surprise. 25% interview rate in-state, and ~20% interview rate out-of-state according to MSAR.

O= Ohio, not Oregon.

I find it hard to beleive that there is absolutely NO preference for in state applicants. I beleive the OSU secondary asks specifically for ties to the state of Ohio if you're OOS, which might mean they consider only your ties to the state in admissions and let OOS or in state status affect only your tuition.

But OSU does have a reputation (along with Michigan) in being very welcoming of OOS'ers, particularly if they're very good applicants. The state does offer financial incentives for in state students, but this might be made up for in the high tuition differential (24,609 versus 38,211). I also know that OSU is very helpful in aiding student change their state residency for the second year and will adjust tuition as well after the freshman year.

After being denied Ohio residency by OSU this summer, they told me the same thing. Not sure how true it is, but I have an interview there next week. There's a bit of anecdotal evidence for you.

Like any state school they have some in-state preference.

Actually, 28% vs 20% is pretty non-standard interview rates. UMDNJ is 50% IS vs 5% OOS. UMinn is 40% vs 10%. Inidiana U is something like 90% IS vs 15% OOS. UMiami 25% vs 7%, etc.

I agree - it appears that OSU is pretty darn close to not showing preference, certainly more so than most other state schools...the Virginia schools are also pretty generous to OOS applicants...
