I'm think of applying to OSU (Ohio State) dental school as a "back up" school (it's not my primary choice).

So far it looks like the OSU application is very involved: volunteer form, office observation report.

I don't particularly want to run around collecting volunteer coordinator signatures, and the such.

My question is, how involved is the supplemental application? I can't view it because I first need to create an account. If the supplemental is very involved, I may just forget about finishing my application to OSU and save my money.

For anyone that's already completed it, is it lengthy and require several paragraph responses?

Thanks for any responses! 🙂

Really? No one finished their application to OSU? 😛

It is not that involved at all. I currently attend OSU COD. It's been great so far! The application was done pretty quickly, they value leadership and community service so when I filled mine out I got to put my various service projects and volunteer opportunity on the form. I don't remember having to put any signatures from those who can verify your work and I don't remember there being any kind of big essay either.

First, are you in-state? Ohio State should not be considered a back-up school, especially if you're out of state. ~75 seats of 100 seats are for Ohioans. They also have a VERY objective way of giving out interviews and acceptances (strictly numbers in a computer). Even for in-staters, many choose OSU because of the tuition so it is competitive.

To answer your question, yes it is probably one of the most involved secondaries. It's not difficult per say, just a lot of busy working filling out those little boxes. Shadowing forms (don't need signatures), volunteer forms, little essays, etc. They don't have to be long responses, so you could finish it in a day. Good luck!

I'm not an Ohio resident. 🙁

I don't think any school is a back up school, but I just said that because it's not my first pick (and it's not my last pick either).

I'm seeing all that busy work, but at least it's not too bad! Not like Tennessee for example!

It shouldn't even take that long to do it.

That is true that in order to promote keeping dentist in Ohio they do reserve 75% (75-78) of the seats (104) for ohioans. One of the advantages of OSU is if you are out of state and live here for one year while you are in school you can become a resident and drop down to the admission prices of in-state residents for the remaining 3 years.

Wow! That's fantastic advice! 👍

Just out of curiosity, where exactly did you get that information? I'm applying to OSU this year and was just wondering if this is really the case. Not questioning your info, but just wondering...

Sorry MrBeans, I'm not meaning to hijack your thread at all. In return, I know that you can see a sample secondary on their website, as well as look at the observation and community service forms.

Nah, you weren't hijacking my thread 😉

Your question was relevant to the thread!

By the way, I just finished all the forms now. It wasn't that bad at all! 🙂

I'd like to know where that information came from too.

So you've already received the secondary from them? Or you just filled them out online and saved the responses so when you do get it, you can just cut and paste?

I already received the secondary from them (notification to proceed via email).

I did not really have my responses ready to go. I spent about 3-4 hours just filling out the application online.

I finished it today and it was not that involved. But DON'T apply to OSU as a backup, it's EXTREMELY competitive to get in as an in-state student and almost impossible to get in from out of state. OSU is my reach school as well as my 1st choice, and I'm an Ohio resident.

the tuition so it is competitive.

Had to laugh a little about the tuition being competitive, i guess if you are in state maybe but otherwise they are higher than most of the private schools. They do state you can apply for residency after the first year but i haven't found out how difficult it is.

Just wanted to say that this info is correct. I interviewed there last cycle and they gave these stats during one of the presentations. It is also on their website...

They also only interview 180 students for the 104 spots...so if you get an interview, you have a great shot...but getting that interview is quite tough considering they select their interviewees from a database that is based strictly on stats (things like EC, LORs, and PS are assigned numbers to be calculated in with your gpa and dat score for a final total) then take the people with the highest numbers.

Very interesting. Thanks for the info!

So for all you that got the secondary today, am I right to assume you were all in the first mailing last Friday?
