OSU vs NYMC

Hi all another A vs B thread.

So I recently got accepted OSU. And now I have the fortunate choice between OSU and NYMC. And I'm not sure how to compare their matchlists.

OSU
pros:
-higher ranking school/better reputation
-closer knit student body
-loved the campus
-cheaper living in Columbus


cons:
-My move to New York had already been set. I found a place to stay and I sent most of my clothes there already.



NYMC:
pros:
- a lot of matches on the East Coast
- 15k/yr scholarship that brings down private tuition to the level an affordable level.
-already moved everything there.
-being close to NYC!

cons:
-students seemed much more burnt out

hands down OSU, in my opinion
no question in my mind about which school you should choose

This is a tough choice because of the situation. If it was earlier and you hadn't made plans already, I'd say OSU hands down. With the plans you've made, though, it might be better to stay with what you've got. I don't know how firm your plans are for NYMC, though. If they are very firm (you've bought a place, roped into a lease or rent or something, etc.), then NYMC might win out. If it's a matter of just getting your clothes back (a few hundred bucks or something?) and you really really want to go to OSU, don't let something little like that stop you! Especially since it's a drop in the bucket, really.

Moving to 2008-2009 School-Specific Discussions.

While I don't have much to say about the two schools in general, I would caution any pre-med to read too much into a match list. I think a match list really says a lot more about what fields and institutions the students want to wind up at rather than the ability (or inability) of the medical school to put students into certain fields/institutions. In general, if a student really want to match a particular residency, they can do it from any medical school if they work hard enough.

OSU for sure - not only is it cheaper cost of living, you get in-state residency in Ohio after a year of going to school there.

Move to OSU even though you are settled in NY... an OSU medical degree will go very far in your career in my opinion

I might be biased as I am attending NYMC this year. However, you need to go to the school you want to go to. I talked this over with my dad for hours since I am also on a waiting list for another school I would rather attend. However, moving your clothes, signing onto a lease.. these things can all be cancelled. Go to the school you want to attend - the school you will be happiest at, the school that will get you to where you want to go, the school that will be cheaper.

I might have signed on for the loans, set up the computer system, and spoken to my roomies already but if I get off the wait-list to that other school (sadly doubtful), which is across the country, I would probably pick up and leave. A week or two of stress changing everything around is trivial compared to 4 years of possible unhappiness and regret.

it sounds like OSU has more positives for you. What is the difference in the cost between the two schools when you consider the scholarship that you got at NYMC and the possibility of paying instate tuition at OSU after the first year, that somebody mentioned?

I'm starting at OSU next month. Interestingly NYMC didn't even give me an interview let alone an acceptance! Random process eh?

Here's OSU's tuition cost over four years if you start as OOS and do 3 years in state:

From NYMC's page here is 4 years of tuition at 43,400/yr.

That's $30,000 before you consider cost of living difference between Columbus and NY. I'll be paying $370/month for a 1500 sq ft 2 bedroom townhouse with one roommate 7 miles from campus in Columbus.

But if you get $15,000/yr from NYMC then $60,000 over the four years might even make NYMC cheaper than OSU. Crunch the numbers for yourself, though.

I loved OSU when I interviewed and I talked to several current OSU students from my alma mater that thought OSU was a great school. I didn't interview at NYMC so I can't compare and contrast for you, but OSU seemed to be big and well known and moving up in the world. But at the same time it seemed very student friendly with lots of opportunities. Columbus is a big city but not too big. Good luck with your decision!

The financial factor was what mainly kept me from making a decision, but I decided to switch schools to OSU. It's kind of stressful getting everything together with only a few weeks left until school starts.

But OSU has been so absolutely helpful. I love the admissions office. They're making things much easier. And they are so absolutely welcoming. Now, I know I made the right choice. 😉
