OT: Bin Laden is DEAD!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It's a child's mentality. Eye for an eye doesn't work on a preschool playground, let alone in global politics.

You are correct on this. I never understood the notion of "like response" or "limited response". It makes you look nice to the gentry, but the thugs see you as weak and will continue their assault. A much more practical method is "I assume you have hit me with everything you have and will now respond with everything I have." If you totally obliterate your opponent in the opening moves, they have no recourse but to surrender. Eye for and eye may make the world blind, but an eye for a life just leaves one guy with a little less depth perception.

The only thing that I have to say about this is that my coworker declared
"at least OBAMA IS DEAD!"
I am not sure what the previous statement had been to get this reaction, but I gave her a quizzical look and laughed at her until she realized what she was saying.

This must say something about the day I am having, but I could not figure out what was so funny about that quote until I read for like the fifth time😳

Now I probably just got myself on some sort of watch list....:scared: 😛

I hardly think rejoicing over a dead man is appropriate😕

I think more people are rejoycing at the death of an idea of a man and not the actual human being. It is what he represented and what he did.

I am usually a very "Peace, love and veggies" type person, but I will admit that I am happy he is dead. Being from NY, (although not the city) I know a lot of people who were directly devastated from 9/11. They have personally said that this brings them a small fraction of closure. I think that is worth rejoicing over.

When we become tolerant to killing as a way to "justify" things, How are we any better than those that killed first?

I think that everyone is entitled to their own opinion. If you're happy that OBL is dead, then be happy. If you're not, then don't be. I think this thread is getting a little too out of hand w/ people taking opinions as personal attacks. If you disagree with someone else's opinion, that's fine. It's a free country.
Bottom line...I don't see how arguing over the death of OBL on an SDN forum gets anybody anywhere.
:beat:
Facebook seems like a more appropriate place for that!

There is no answer to this. Good people are sometimes people who do bad things to bad people. The term "good" is a very relative term.

The world would never function property on the "eye for an eye" idea, but it wouldn;t do so well if everyone was a pacifists either.

Everyone is a hypocrite in some way, shape or form.
EVERYONE.

Beating a dead horse...? We aren't even to two pages yet! There are about 100 other threads that have gone on meaningless rants for longer periods of time.

If people don't agree with this thread, they don't have to read/post to it.

So what makes someone "bad"? Where do we draw the line? Sometimes it is important to stop and think about what your REALLY going along with. Are ppl acting happy because that is what is expected of them by those that were directly effected by 9/11? Or are they truely happy that another person was killed becase that person killed others?

I'm just not sure everything we went through was worth it: http://www.explosm.net/comics/2409/

In addition, his death changes nothing. There are still terrorists out there. Moreso, there are bigots all over THIS country still killing people. His death didn't eliminate hate. I don't feel any safer. I'm more afraid of some guy with a gun who might live in the low income housing 4 blocks from my apartment than I ever was of Bin Ladin.

True, but it just seems like it's one of those "gets you nowhere" type of conversations. Like politics, religion, abortion, organic chemistry, etc.... *attempt at humor*

I seriously doubt any of these posts are going to accomplish anything. No one is going to change their mind on how they feel. Don't get me wrong, I'm pretty sure you and I have the exact same opinion on the issue in question, but like the other threads that go on for pages and pages, it ultimately goes nowhere and accomplishes nothing. Unless, people are consdering the gratification they get from agruing with someone as an accomplishment...then I digress.

No offense meant to anyone, I just think this thread has the potential to get ugly and go nowhere fast.

I wasn't really being that defensive. I 100% meant to put some smiley face in there and just forgot. 😀

Vetme,
Im curious to what your solution is then? Have you ever been overseas? Unfortunately the real world is not like your parents basement were you have apparently been singing kumbaya and playing make believe. Seriously, are you defending his right to live and if so please explain why?

I believe the declaration of independence defends this right.

I think that everyone is too nice nowadays... war is war. It isn't "hey there neighbor. let me shake your hand before I shoot you." Im all for it and I am definitely celebrating over his dead body. In the same way that he and other terrorists have celebrated over the dead bodies of Americans. I wish we could bomb the middle east and turn it to glass. This war has only gone on so long because of silly war rules. I say bomb 'em all.

Just my opinion.

Now now... let's all play nicely.

Ohhhhhhh that's exactly what I thought when I read the title this morning... and I've said my piece and angered people so my work here is done anyways. Someone should close this, for it's lack of relevance anyways.

I didn't get that from his/her post at all. I took it as a question as to why people are celebrating - ie just going along with the masses with the whole America f** yeah mentality, or are we truly happy he is dead, even though very few of us are directly related to the 9/11 incident.

And in addition, thinking of what makes a person bad enough to kill. I mean obviously, he thought Americans were bad enough to kill. Everyone's definition of "bad" is different. Although in this case, I think badness is pretty clear-cut.

I don't think he/she was defending a right to live for OBL. Correct me if I am wrong, but that is how I took it.

You are not wrong, WhtsThFrequency.

Blah and Blah.

It's easy to be a rabid patriot when the only action it requires is a Facebook status update, or a forum post without spell check.

Somehow I doubt that your convictions will keep you from filling up your car with Saudi gas.

Or that you'll think twice about voting for politicians who want to send billions more in military aid to Pakistan.

But carry on. Booyah America, killing terrorists up in here!

Wait, are you being serious?

Seriously, no. (Although the right to "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" IS in the Declaration of Independence...just saying.)

But I do believe you're being ridiculous. What do you say to the millions of people (including myself) who don't believe in the death penalty? And yes, this time I'm serious. Have you seen the list of countries, along with the US, that use capital punishment? Most of them are classified as the third world and/or have governments which are usually referred to as oppressive.

How I sometimes think of Dsmoody23:

And I'm usually like:

Well, at the very least it is interesting to see that, even with a common goal of performing veterinary medicine, we are still one big melting pot of personal beliefs. 😳

I love the increasing use of memes on this forum.

That is all.

Image macros. Cool. Internetwarp to 4chan, or 10 years ago on SA.

This is so off-scale that it annoyed/confused me for about 10 minutes before I even understood what it was trying to say.

I think it's mocking the Christian creationist time line. But even then the birth of black jesus should be closer to the now and not the big bang.

Course, the usual result of trying to overly analyze and make sense of anything on the internet causes a nose bleed and a headache, followed by a loss of consciousness, self-loathing, and poor gas mileage, so I try not to dwell on it too much.

I think I missed something.

It is just something I picture someone like Dsmoody doing before each post so to physically see it was quite humorous. Although I think I would laugh if I saw it anywhere on SDN. It is so relevant to many vibes on threads but people don't use pictures.

I'll have to let him explain why he actually posted it.

I don't see anything posted, just my quote and a blank space. Tried to quote his reply to see if it was a facebook image (those don't show up for me on forums for some reason) but that didn't help either. Highlighting reveals no hidden text either. My invisible post inspection kit is out of resources. 🙁

(Yes... I actually took time to try and figure out what the hell google image search was used to find the image. I won with "facepalm laptop". It sure beats finishing up an essay about the motivations of the character Iago in Shakespeare's Othello)

Ah, that makes more sense.

Are you going with "he's evil" or "he's in love with Othello"?

Psst. Nobody likes hockey.

This made me laugh out loud and took me back to the playground in grade school where off subject insults started flying during an argument.:meanie:
