Hi, what are my chances of getting into OT school? I have been discouraged lately due to reading people's statistics online and don't feel like I have any chance.
GPA : 3.2
Prereq gpa : 3.4-3.6
Major: Psychology
Minor: Public Health
Extracurriculars: Internship at a preschool for children with special needs where I observed an OT and helped in the classroom, internship at a middle/high school for those with special needs, camp counselor for individuals with disabilities, hand therapy observation (30 hours), school OT for children with disabilities (20 hours), study abroad in Italy where I volunteered to teach english, mentored children in the 3rd grade for a few months
This summer, prior to applying in the Fall for the Fall 2019, I am going to work as an after school aide for children with disabilities, along with observing, hopefully, more OT's for about 50-60 more hours.
I am applying to:
Kean, NYIT, NYU, Columbia, seton hall, stockton, york college, LIU brooklyn, SUNY downtown, stony brook

I was also wondering if anyone applied to OTA programs as a back up? I am really passionate about OT but I am discouraged about my experiences and would become an OTA as a backup plan.

I think you definitely have a chance at OT school. I helped my daughter through the process of applying. The advice I would give is apply early, get good recommendations, start early on your personal statement and if you can maybe shadow in a different population. It's not all gpa, you can make a good impression at the interview, that's where your shadowing experiences will help. If you get your application in early NYIT interviews as early as October. I don't know if I would try OTA because the length of the program is the same as MSOT and you already have a bachelors. Good Luck.

Hi, do you mind me asking where were some places that your daughter shadowed?

She shadowed at a preschool, a nursing/rehabilitation home and an outpatient facility. It's best to try and make contact as soon as possible so that you can start by the end of May / beginning of June because she said they had a lot of volunteers beginning in July and August.
