No, real coffee is brewed by a Turkish man in his little hut. That crap must've had 400mg of caffeine in it.

I like $bux's regular brew alright...

Makes me remember something I read about once... some coffee style where the beans are ground down to almost a powder, it's made really stout (I think with the grounds still in it) and served in tiny tiny little cups. It's almost kind of syrupy, almost. Not sure if it's a Middle East/Western Asia thing, part of me wants to say Northern Africa. Confirm/deny?

That's basically what Turkish coffee is:

Looks like mud.

Awesome. 😍

The Turkish coffee sort of reminds me of Cuban espresso...

North Cuba  Never heard that one before.

It's probably just me, but PDA is starting to make me feel like I'm taking Organic III or something like that. My professor actually has a book called "advanced organic chemistry." http://www.amazon.com/Advanced-Organic-Chemistry-Reactions-Mechanisms/dp/0471601802

We've been reviewing Organic I and II and skipping through stuff very quickly. We had a little quiz on the first day of class where we had 29 organic questions. I managed to get 25 of those, but the class average was 17 🙂eek🙂.

Nice job on getting above average! I always liked organic chemistry, but I for some reason never did as well as I wanted to. Which class in particular do you think I would need to review the most prior to matriculation?

Yeah it's called that because the largest percentage of people in Miami are Cuban. There's also quite a bit of south Americans and a good sized Haitian population too... but the vast majority are Cuban. I'm not Cuban, but my family who came from Spain and Portugal stopped in Cuba along the way here so I guess it kind of applies!

Which reminds me... has anyone else heard about that huge earthquake that destroyed Port au Prince? It's on the news down here but I'm not sure about other places.

Congrats on the orgo questions! I have my orgo review book that my professor made with her husband to outline the important parts of the chapters so I guess I'll be needing that if I ever take that class.

Over 100,000 feared dead. May god be with them.

That's being pretty heavily covered up here in the midwest as well. It's sad, on top of the body count apparently very little of their buildings/infastructure was insured.

P4Sci, if smart people like us don't have children, what will the world be left with? You should at least anonymously donate your sperm so you can put some intelligence back into the gene pool.
Not necessarily true. Although there is some genetics involved, IQs can vary between parent and child. Some children have higher IQs than their parents; others have lower. As long as there is this variability, there will always be "intelligent" people on the planet, even though other "intelligent" people choose not to have kids.

OK...Back to reading this long@ss thread...

Seeing as it's a developing country, I'm not surprised. I would be surprised if buildings in my home country (Nigeria) are insured. When you have to struggle for the basics, you do not worry about "luxuries" like building insurance.

You know, honestly the only thing I know about the population in Florida (specifically Miami) is from what I've seen on Grand Theft Auto Vice City.......... & seen on Bravo's show Miami Social.

I sooooo do not agree with you, but that's a topic for the sociopolitical forums.

Yeah, definitely is, and it's something we'll never agree on. It'll inevitably come down to "faith" and in believing something that's about as silly as believing in the Easter Bunny with about as much proof of existence. But to each his own! Whatever gives you peace, Medicalcpa. 🙂 2 weeks in Iraq and any chance at me believing in a God went right out the window. How many 10 year-olds can you see blown into fractions, with their blood and innards splattered on your humvee before you lose your religion, I wonder?

Stereoisomerism... ah, wonderful word.

Environment plays a role, but genetics is still the big influence.

We have all kinds of bricks coming into our pharmacy that think that getting pregnant is the same thing as "being a good mom" and that they all deserve medals. I genuinely believe preparation is part of what makes someone a good parent. Accidents happen, but it should be an accident and not a complete lack of prevention that initiates an unexpected pregnancy.

I was an accident, and I turned out alright.

You hit an important point, in that preparation is really, really important. I may have been accidental, but my childhood, as underprivileged as it was, was solid... My mom spent a lot of time with me and such, made sure I had good support in school.

We could wax philosophical about what makes a bright kid bright. It's hard to go off genetics only... it's an amalgamation of so much stuff. Opportunity, placement, motivation, ambition, dedication, enjoyment of school, direction/support... There are so many places where both parent and child can "go wrong", so many pitfalls as it were... And I am so, so very glad I will not ever have to deal with that stuff. Escapism at its finest, but at least I know my limits.

I think the more recent conclusion the scientific community has tried to come to when predicting intelligence is something like 50% genetics, 50% environment... but that sounds pretty arbitrary to me. They admit they aren't really sure, but if I had to guess I would say genetics is up there.

But then you run into anomalies, like my wife, who came from parents who never even graduated from junior college.

I think one hitch we're always going to run into is the definition of intelligence that we use. For example, my mechanic is as dumb as a rock. If you ask him to spell "conscience" he will butcher it. But the man is absolutely amazing with a wrench, and he can Dx an electrical problem in 1/4 of the time anyone else can... so can we conclude he's a *****, and not intelligent? I surely think not.

So then we can hem and haw about what makes someone intelligent and etc, etc...

That's an amazing point. There once was an ahole in one of my senior science classes that had this insane superiority complex/theory about how life scientists are the only intelligent persons in the society and every non-scientific individual is subhuman. I remember he even told me about a book he read on this subject. He was such a jerk, everyone hated him.

You know I won't answer that...I would like to, but it would be a waste of time, since we won't change each other's minds.

My psychology teacher told me intelligence is correlated with how old you were when you started reading and how often you read. He told me all the smartest people in the world have one thing in common and that's they all started reading at a very early young and they often read a lot. You can tell in their vocabulary and everyday language that they are intelligent people. It's in their mannerism.

He says that while there is NO prove that reading is a CAUSE of intelligence, but if you look at people that score the highest in SAT, IQ tests, etc. thats in the triple 9 and mensa, again they usually have one thing in common it's that they read a lot and usually started reading at an very early age. There is a strong correlation between high IQ and people that read a lot.

I really wish I read more when I was younger, instead of watching TV all the time! 🙁 Its too late once you get older!

I usually don't ever get offended when I hear a religious idiot speak. I usually just tell myself, WOW not another delusional idiot and then walk off. Telling me that there is a God, is like telling me there is a monster under my bed. You can tell me what you want, but since you have NO prove it's FALSE. I won't get angry, but I will know you are delusional for sure!

But anyways, ONE time a religious freak did offend me very much when he said this,"I don't understand why atheists do good things. Why do atheist have morals if they don't believe in God or a Heaven?" "If I was an atheist I would steal and kill b/c its not like there is a Heaven or God anyways." He even told me at one point that,"I know a lot of Atheists do very good deeds, but its very illogical. They don't believe in Heaven and there is only one life for them so why do they care about doing good deeds for others? I don't understand it."

I was PISSED when I heard that ****. 😡

Okay first of all I don't need an imaginery man to tell me about morals to know about it!!! I believe the last time I checked believing in an imaginery power man that does NOT exist would be more ILLOGICAL!!! Morals and religion are NOT connected at all. And if the ONLY reason Christians are willing to do good deeds is b/c they want to go to Heaven then thats EVEN WORST. I do something good b/c it makes me feel GOOD and b/c I FEEL like it...I don't need anything in return for doing a good deed.
So basically, according to this religious *****, religious people only do good deeds b/c they want something in return (a good relationship with god and a chance to go to Heaven). They can't just do something b/c they LIKE to? Its always about getting something in return now? Typical Christian! 🙄

And don't get me started on religious hypocrites either.

Sorry for the rant...that statement really PISS me off to no end. Why on Earth do I need an imaginary God freak to tell me about morals? Atheists are smart enough to figure it out on our own! And if the only reason why Christians are doing good deeds is b/c they are too scared to go to hell then thats a even worst reason!

Just because someone is talented in one area doesn't make them genius. As many have already said, intelligence depends on many factors most of which are immeasurable. We can draw as many correlations as we want. When it comes down to it (and to anything really), it is much more complex than we can even imagine. We have barely tapped into genetics. Who knows where that will take us...or not take us?

Who was it that said, "Intelligence is the ability to hold two opposing ideas in mind at the same time"? Or something to that effect. I think they were on to something...

A lot of people seek peace in Christianity because it provides answers to questions that most of us have asked ourselves. It is great when people do good things but I have to admit that my interactions with pious Christians have been less than enjoyable. Today, I saw this woman at the mall wearing a skimpy dress and right in the middle of her DD fake breasts was a big ass cross with Jesus on it. I mean, c'mon...is that really Christian? If you are going to preach the Bible and about God's holiness etc etc. then you should live by it yourself and not pick and choose what you want or do not want to believe. Just be a good person for the sake of being a good person- not because you believe someone wants you to do it or because it will earn you a golden ticket through the pearly gates.

Just be a good person for the sake of being a good person- not because you believe someone wants you to do it or because it will earn you a golden ticket through the pearly gates.

I attempted to explain my reasons for going good things! I do good things b/c 1) I love the person that I am doing it for or 2) It just makes me feel happy and it makes the person that I love happy or 3) Its a cause I believe in or 4) Hell, I am just in a good mood and b/c I feel like it!

Those are usually the reasons why I do something good.

The reasons I don't kill or steal or cheat is b/c
1) I don't do things to people that I wouldn't want done to myself. 2) I don't want to go to jail. 3) I have never hated anyone before so I have no reason to kill. 4) I don't steal b/c I believe you don't deserve it unless you can afford it...and that goes with anything. 5) I am not low class or ghetto so I don't steal. 6) I am just an honest person. I don't know how else to explain it.

I TRIED for hours to explained my reasoning to this christian and he still does NOT understand WHY I do good deeds b/c I do not believe in God or a heaven! 🙄 He keeps on saying...if you don't believe in heaven then whats the point of doing all these good deeds?? why not steal? you don't believe in Hell, so whats the problem???

He just can't UNDERSTAND the fact that I do NOT need something in return for doing something good and I do NOT need something or someone to scare me (like going to hell) to stop me from doing something bad! I have morals b/c I have common sense, I know whats right and wrong. I am not an idiot, I don't need mr. imaginery man to explain logical things to me. I am a very logical person that understands everything.

If Christians can't understand WHY Atheists or anyone in general can do something good and NOT getting anything in return, then I think they are the ones that are bad!!! so the next time a Christian wants to do something nice for me I will know its b/c they don't want to go to hell. Thats the only reason!

I was going to ask you guys: does reading this forum qualifies as reading ?

I read a disappointgly small number of books ( maybe 5-7 a months), so SDN is only tangible form of reading I do. 🙁

I go to church and practice christianity because I think it makes me TRY to be the best person I can be. Living with good moral standards through many parables that the Bible has bestowed in its book gives me a path to follow in my life. Yes, people DO stumble and fall out of a righteous path, but thats what makes us human. I am not perfect, nor will I ever be perfect. And like the stories I have been reading in the above posts, it doesnt sound like they are anywhere near perfect either. But, some of us try to read and study the Bible so I can at least strive to be as close as possible. I dont try to do good deeds just because it will get me to heaven. I try to do good because it is the RIGHT thing to do, not because I will go to hell because I wont do it- thats rather ludacris. Whether it be helping some young kid with their homework or even carrying an old womans grocery bags to her car, I do it because they need help and it puts a smile on someone elses face. I am not ripping anyone or anything, I am just getting a HUGE, negative vibe from this thread about christianity. I think alot of you are actually great people and I do appreciate your knowledge when it comes to pharmacy school but I'd rather you left these ordeals off here. 👍

It ain't just Christianity. There is complete and utter hypocrisy from every organized religion.

But if a work of fiction is what you need to guide you through life and to be the best person you can be, more power to you.

Speaking of Christians, though, the recent Haiti tragedy is expressly why a "Three O" God, like the one Christians exalt, is totally hypocritical. Omnibenevolent... yeah. No doubt the Haitians are feelin' that total omnibenevolence. So like, do you only get the omnibenevolent protection if you're a Christian, or what?

I guess we probably should get back on-topic, but... what is the topic of an off-topic thread anyway?

That's the point. Why do people need a book or an imaginery figure to tell them what's right? I already know what's right and I am always on the right path and will always be on the right path. My life is great and I love it. Why do I need this book again?

A book is needed so you can TRY to be the BEST that you can be? Why can't you do that ON YOUR OWN?:laugh::laugh: I am already the best that I can be. Again why is the book or a imaginery man needed here? A book of stories? what for? Again I can do EVERYTHING you listed above (good deeds, help people, etc.) ALL by myself. I am logical and if I ever need an answer I read a SCIENTIFIC book that's only FULL OF FACTS. So why do I need this imaginery person again?

If reading a fictional book makes you feel better thats great, but just realize that there are LOGICAL people in this world that are already on the right path and are already the BEST and don't need any imaginery things helping them.

Christians choose the bible
Atheists choose LOGICS and FACTS and COMMON SENSE

that is all

Don't get me started on the fact that christians think ANYONE can go to heaven as long as they get forgiveness from Mr. God.

So I can be a hardcore murder, a thief, etc. I can do WHATEVER I want...but on my death bed I can ask for forgiveness and go to heaven! Hmmm...that seems right to ME! 🙄

If you want rules how about this.... everyone that kills and steals and do bad things go to hell for good, no matter what! thats how it should be! No asking for forgiveness on your death bed, thats just full of BS. If Christians can make "laws" that actually make sense then maybe it would be a little bit less absurd to believe in this imaginery thing.

I love it and the book gives me insight into certain peoples lives, so I can apply what I learn in the Bible so I can live my life. Like I said I am not perfect, but I strive to be. I need God because in Christianity he offers out forgiveness to those who seek and believe in him. I know I stumble and fall throughout my walks in life but I believe if I repent and keep reminding myself(through parables and what-not) of how I can better myself then I can hopefully try to change. I, myself, try to apply these things because after time certain tendencies become habitual. Thus, I would like to have positive things in my life become habitual while in the process of trying "weed" out the negative aspects in my life and I believe that this good book enables and directs me to achieve these things. Good night and have a great weekend everyone!

I had a big, well-developed post on the basis of religious faith and the impulse of moral behavior....

Then Windows decided it was time to update.

So, in lieu of that, I would just like to state that a Payday and a Red Bull = ****ing good breakfast.

My mom never went to college and my dad only has an AS in computer science but they're both 'intelligent' I guess you could say. My dad was a programmer for Verisign, Inc before he had to leave Georgia to care for his handicapped mom, so yeah it's possible to be really smart and not go to college. I guess what I was trying to say is not so much that intelligence correlates with always going to college, but especially now that getting in to college is a tad bit easier for the underpriveledged than it was back then, most student who find school "easier" relative to others will try and go to college rather than start a family.

For example... since our parents didn't attend college doesn't mean that they don't have an increased aptitude for learning or any other traits that make school easier that could have been passed down to us.

This is just a hypothesis I'm not saying it's true fact by any means I'm just giving an example.

Oh I am so sad I just typed something and it was also deleted!

Oh well... basically I think it's funny you mentioned this because I was just thinking last night about this saying that I hear people say sometimes...

"I'd rather live like there is a God to die and find out there isn't, than live like there isn't a God to die and fine out there IS"

I mean... that is basically saying the same thing... the only motivation for people to "live right" is because they're scared to go to Hell.

I had a lot more to say but it got deleted. 🙁

Yeah it's a classic philosophical debate called Pascal's Wager...

Hm interesting... I was reading a little about it after you mentioned it.

I guess the thing that bothers me is that is leaves so little credit to people in general. I try to live by the basic values and morals that religious or spiritual people would live by even though I don't believe in Hell at all. I have no idea what happens to us when we die and I'm pretty sure no one else does either. In fact, I don't really buy that whole "common experience" thing either... with the bright lights and all that jazz. I mean it could be explained away by a number of other physiological things. Does it bother me that a lack of Hell would save murders and terrorists and career criminals from eternal damnation... No... because it's really none of my business. For all I know we may just cease to exist. Going to Hell is not what drives me to want to treat other people with respect. I think a good portion of strictly religious people are even the same way, but there are the ones who make it seem like that is the ONLY reason why people do it.

Amen. Neither of my parents have a college degree- all learned on the job experience. Neither are dumb. But by "American" standards those without a degree are looked down upon. I believe in any case experience will overshadow any form of degree (higher and not). And I'm really excited that because my parents don't have a degree I have the option to put on my application "first generation" it gives me a strong sense of self and purpose knowing I will be the first to get a degree (basically the first in my whole entire family line...... besides my aunt who is a CPA). I guess that's just me. But I will completely reap any benefits (scholarships, grants) that come along for being first gen.... And I wholeheartedly agree with your quoted statement.

I agree too that experience is really really important and oftentimes more important than a degree with no experience or even very little. From what I understand in relation to computer engineers and stuff. there are levels... like 1,2,3,4, etc based upon experience. So companies will higher an employee based off of that... even if the person just has an associates and 20+ years of experience opposed to perhaps a recent graduate with a master's degree. Kind of like pharmacists with bachelor degrees instead of a new graduate with a pharm D... I mean yeah the level of training and knowledge is probably more intense and up to date, but the experience in the pharmacy is invaluable.
