Wicked Lasers 'Lightsaber' Can Burn Eyes and Skin

An ultra-powerful handheld laser that looks like a lightsaber from Star Wars can cause permanent eye damage and even set skin ablaze, according to its manufacturer, Wicked Lasers. The Hong Kong-based company bills the new device as "the most dangerous laser ever created." The laser is accordingly raising eyebrows in the blogosphere and in safety circles alike.

I just ordered one of these bad boys. Self defense wise, I like it a lot better than a knife (too slow in high pressure situations), pepper spray (wind can cause the spray to hit you also), gun (too many laws and paperwork with this).

"That’s an awful lot of power," said Anibarro, and he noted that this laser "could injure someone a mile away."http://www.technewsdaily.com/wicked-lasers-lightsaber-can-burn-eyes-and-skin-0711/
Doesn't really sound like a personal protection item here.

Aslo, with knives, guns, pepper spray, just holding them without using them is a threat and most aggressors will back down. If you hold this thing up, they're going to laugh at you and continue their robbery/assault/rape/etc

Let us know how this works out for you. How big is it? Will you wear it on your side like a Jedi? Why not a stun gun?

On a side note, in what way is a knife too slow?

Yeah, they'll laugh for a little bit. Pulling something weird out like this usually puts them off guard/relaxed for a little bit. Enough time to get a haymaker or a swift kick to the balls in.

How much longer are they going to be laughing after they are permanently blinded?

Edit: A knife is too slow in the sense the time it takes to draw it, get it open (unless it is a switch blade, which is illegal, it takes a very strong wrist flick to get it to open, and in a situation like that, I don't know if I can give it a strong wrist flick without throwing away the knife. That and they are going actively struggle against being stabbed/slashed.

Vs, they can't do much against a weapon moving at the speed of light.)

It's a good thing you're getting a weapon other than your hands for protection. Never throw a haymaker. When you're getting mugged. that is not the time to be telegraphing your attacks. Throwing a haymaker is akin to Johan Santana screaming before his windup "Curveball's coming, bitch!"

Bah... You need a Blu-ray Laser Phaser!

sparda, nice post.. i found this a week or so ago and am already saving money to order one.. i dont know if it will be worth it though in the end, but really how much money wouldnt you spend for super powers?

Hmm, I have a different definition for haymaker. In boxing, it's usually referred to as a wild swing to go for a knockout, but to me a haymaker means a cheap shot punch. I know that the military uses this thing to disable adversaries from a long distance away to use as a cover to advance through the field.

This would be a great thing for some teenagers to be shining at people...

I believe there's a minimum age requirement and some forms you gotta fill out when you order this thing. Also, I'm pretty sure purchasing info probably goes directly to the FBI. Thus, if I use this to target airplanes, they'll know that there is probably only one owner of a 1 watt blue laser in the area from where the beam came from.

OK, so irresponsible parent buys this for their kid, then s/he has it. What's the difference..?

Forms and restrictions are to limit the company's culpability, nothing more.
