OT: what will you stock up on?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
NUTELLA.

I am sure they have it over there, but if I not I will be ordering in bulk from amazon.com

Completely off topic but I always suggest people sign up for amazon prime. It costs money but pays for itself shortly. I order a lot of food in bulk online and shipping would be really expensive (10 lb bag of flour) but with the prime membership you get free 2-day shipping. It saves me a lot of money on stuff I know I go through a lot of (like peanut butter, flour, oatmeal etc.) It's awesome.

Amazon Prime is free for students with a school email...

Really? Did not realize that. Whenever I want to use it I use my mom's account, who pays for prime. (One bad thing about having my credit card info on my moms account is that every once in a while she accidentally uses it instead of hers.)

She is a teacher though with a school address, maybe I will tell her about that.

Good to know!

I am waitlisted at two schools and submitting an app. to Ross.

Is it bad that I want to save $$$ so I can fly home to have my hair cut and colored? I'm afraid of having anyone else besides the current hair dresser do this!

Damn. That's one expensive haircut!

I'm not going to a foriegn country, but I'm afriad to that I'll run out of and then be too cheap to replace...toiletries. Shampoo, toothpaste, contact solution. I'll make sure i have enough to get through the next year.

We are making our IKEA shopping list right now! Unfortunately the closest one will be 400+ miles away after our move. It's only for a year, and it means more things to move...but still! 😀

I was looking at IKEA stuff as well. Its quite a way from the schools.. and my back up plan is Ross - I think they tax you on imported goods out the wazoo.
I think IKEA ships though 🙂

On another note - I think I'll have to get over myself and get the hair cut whever I am. I will not have the time nor money to travel for it 🙁

def. food from my home country because ill def. be cooking a good bit lol

Redhead: I've never heard of it before, but that sounds heavenly!

IT IS. It looks exactly like butterscotch and smells exactly like butterscotch and its amazing and makes my skin all smooth and silky. It also doubles as shampoo and bubble bath!

Also, to you IKEA people: I live basically across the street from one. It's annoying on weekend days with nice weather because everyone and their dentist is going there. The light that leads to both IKEA and where I live is backed the heck up and all but like, two people are going to IKEA. Yes, I am bitter, but no I cannot deny their deals 😛

Heartworm Preventative/Flea & Tick preventative/Pet Food. All of which I get at cost at my current clinic...

While every other vet students from around the country is enjoying their free food and preventatives, don't forget to send us poor UC Davis students a kind thought everyonce in a while. *sigh*

(As of last year, the UC system does not allow reps to give health professional students free product. Load of CRAP. For heaven's sake - we're smart enough to know that they are trying to buy our love and are competent to know whether or not we will want to recommend it to our future clients. arrgghhh....This was one of the biggest "perks" of vet school that I was looking forward to!)

No. I'm not bitter. Not at all. :meanie:

At least I can get it at cost - so really no right to complain. 🙂

Don't forget to stockpile on cold meds unless you're sure the country you're going to will have some that you're comfortable taking! The nyquil/tylenol pm kind with the sleepy stuff doesn't exist everywhere, and cold med strength differs dep on where you go. The US cold meds seem to be on the stronger side of things.

you mean pet food too? noooooooooooooo!!!
hot damn I'd be uber bitter. That's like the best part of vet school 😛.
i not only get free pet food, it gets delivered to my door at no extra charge!

Yeah, and no more student stipend at the hospital either - just a 20% employee discount starting next year (I think we used to get $1400 of work for free, but I never really paid attention because I don't have any pets and won't for many, many years)

Ive been stocking up for months. I'm a little eccentric, though... taking no chances

I got brake pads, oil, air filters, face wash, tooth brushes, tooth paste, safety razors...the list goes on. 😎

That is the first thing I thought if when I started reading this tread- my claritin-d. I am definitely stock piling as much as the state of va will let me. It is the only thing that works on my allergies and us really hard to get bc of the pseudophedrine in it. Stupid drug addicts ruining it for the rest of us.

Is this from Victoria's Secret by any chance? Around the holidays a while ago I bought two bottles of body-wash from them, caramel and gingerbread. They were heavenly.

Yeah, the pet food thing totally sucks. I too was looking forward to it. I didn't know about the stipend at the hospital so it hurts less, I guess.

Whatever political reason they are suspending the vendor "gifts", fine. But to say that it's to stop undue influence on the students is insulting. Really? They think so little of my reasoning ability that they think getting free food will make me jump on that vendor's bandwagon with little thought? For goodness sakes, I'm making enough sacrifices to persue this dream, it would be nice if there were SOME perks through this process. Not that I'm saying I "OUGHT" to get them - I know that I'm not entitled to anything - it was just one of those nice things that was going to brighten up the day a bit - you know what I mean?

Sorry - that was a thread hijack. Feel free to ignore me now.

I'm obviously not bitter or anything.......

Isn't the sleepy stuff just an antihistamine? They don't have this in the UK? What about pseudoephedrine (real Sudafed)? That's what gets me through the day when I have a cold.

huh, I didn't even think about it since the labels always list Diphenhydramine HCl as a nighttime sleeping aid, but it is indeed an antihistamine. (and those things knock me out for a good 72 hrs so I never take it, so I never thought about what was in it)

I'm pretty sure the UK and Canada has most of the stuff available in the US (tho i dunno about pseudoephedrine), so I was talking I guess more for the people going off to the Caribbeans. And I guess it's not so much an issue of there being antihistamines available, but whether it's a part of the cold-med formulations. In a lot of place, OTC drugs are much simpler (or at least so I hear).

Peanut butter, Ranch dressing, and Macaroni and Cheese. These are all things you can't really get here in France, and I assume there would be even less availability in the Caribbean.

Nutella is definitely available everywhere in the UK. There is even a Costco in Edinburgh!

Cold meds/pain relievers for sure. Their benadryl doesn't even have antihistamine in it!

Some of the things I seriously missed in the UK:

1. Gummy worms
2. flavored creamer for coffee (nowhere to be found)
3. Splenda (only in a very few places, incl. Costco)
4. Snyder's pretzels in a box (never found them, but they have Utz in a barrel- costco)
5. My younger classmates brought over Kraft Mac and Cheese

One awesome thing you can get over there, but not legally in US.....Cuban Cigars!! 😀

On the contrary, I could go my whole life without Kraft mac and cheese. I grew up eating REAL mac and cheese. At the very least, stuff made with Velveeta, which is still somewhat questionable, but way better than the powdered ugh that comes with the Easy Mac.

What is Benadryl if it's not diphenhydramine?? What do they put in it? Candy?

I would miss...

girl scout cookies
Lay's (though most places probably have those)
my hair color
Wallflowers (smelly plugin things from Bath & Body)
my phone plan (but I probably can't take that with me)

And my husband mentioned some things that nearly made me fall over...

NETFLIX
PANDORA
HULU

Holy crap, I would miss those more than any food item ever made!

Also, going to a restaurant and ordering sweet tea or iced tea. I dunno if that's possible or not!

This is oooooober important if you are going to school in Europe! Phenylpropylalanine -PPA- has been associated with strokes in humans - don't worry - your incontinent old dog does not have this risk if taking PPA.

The US FDA pulled it from OTC products in the US but it is still in other products in Europe.

Just an FYI- and I'm not sure I spelled PPA right

I'm moving to the UK so i'll be taking some American things with me haha. For instance...Peanut Butter M&M's, Kraft Mac & Cheese, maybe some others, and I'm SUPER bummed I can't bring a case of my fav wine, Red Cat from Hazlitt Wineries in NY hahaha. I will miss Finger Lakes wine so badly!

Why wouldn't you be able to get Pandora or Hulu? I'm pretty sure you could watch it/listen. Pandora also has a phone App if the website didn't work. I don't use Hulu, I download torrents for ALL of my shows (actually...couldn't find My Life As Liz) on eztv.it, then I download the torrents with Vuze. The Grey's Anatomy from this past week was up like 40 minutes after the show ended. AWESOME!

Phone plans are actually cheaper in the UK when you consider the exchange rate! At least the ones I'm looking into for the iphone 🙂

The equal to Lay's is Walkers, it's literally the exact same thing!! Haha I make fun of it everytime I see it.

Another addition to my list, sorta: I also couldn't find yellow mustard when I was there, but I hear it exists!

I am now paying more attention to my shopping habits;

Lara Bars and Cliff Bars will be stocked up on for sure! I may have to employ my mother to make a shipment every now and again!

sorry for the ignorance TT, i'm sooo not a clinical person so i'm not big into knowing names of actual drug compounds and to what classes of drugs they belong, unless they're drugs i personally take.

No, no... someone said that the Benedryl there didn't contain diphenhydramine so I was asking what in earth else it would contain.

I just wanted to add that if you're a peanut butter fan, I would stock up because peanut butter in Europe is expensive and quite hard to find. We paid $8.00 for a small jar that we found at Corte-Ingles in Barcelona.... I'm not in love with peanut butter, but I started craving a PB&J sammich in the middle of my time there and had to search high and low and give up my first born to get some 😉

Whattt? I was looking forward to the free food, and my dog needs MPL surgery at some point, but there goes the cheapness of it.. boooo!

No, it's actually made by a company called philosophy. Maybe VS carries it though - I know Sephora does. They make a crapload of "flavors", some are food and others just smell nice 🙂 (philosophy.com if you want to become addicted..)

You can totally hack Netflix/Pandora/Hulu with a program called Hotspot Shield, which basically makes those websites think your computer is in the US 😀
I totally used that for months here in France, but now my internet is too slow. Anyway, it was great while it lasted and I totally recommend it (it's free).

EDIT: by "hack", I meant you'd still have to have your paid account or whatever, just that it was possible to use it when you were physically outside the US.

Ooooooooooh along the lines of hulu and what not. Get a US phone number on your google phone (I think that's what it's called). My bf uses it to text me from his computer while he's at work, and lo and behold, when he used it to call his dad's phone from out of the country he didn't get charged for an international call... which in itself is really cheap, but free >>>> cheap ya kno?

There are ways around it yeah, if you can figure it out (and they don't figure out that you're doing it, lol). It just seems like a pain. 🙂

Isn't Skype a nice, free way to talk internationally?

yeah it is, but both have to be on the computer. If you want to call a phone or a cellphone, you do have to pay (albeit a very VERY cheap price. like $10 lets you talk forever)

and it's actually really simple, and i don't think against terms of service. all you need is an account now before you move.

Yes, exactly. You need an account from the country that you want to call the most to get the cheap rates. For example, with my US account I can call the US (using my computer here in France) for 2 cents a minute but if I call a French number it goes up to 20 cents a minute... :scared:

Skype is AMAZING! I can totally vouch for this as I'm in an international relationship right now. He was in America for a year and that's where we met, then he had to move back to the UK, and Skype has been a life saver. We both have it on our cell phones (also use WhatsApp for texting) and it's 100% free when we're both using it. Before he had internet at his house I used it to call his cell to tell him to get on skype for like 33 cents a minute I think, but I mean it took a minute to get that message across. We often just leave the video feed on when we're both doing hw or watching programs, and he often falls asleep on it while I'm doing hw and I can wake him up when he starts talking in his sleep hahaha.

WhatsApp btw is an AWESOME texting program for iphones/blackberries/droids and probably some other smart phones, it was free for me but he had to pay 2 pounds for it. It's INSTANT and you can see when the other person is typing, and it pings the phone when you get a message when you're out of the app. Skype and WhatsApp have really saved and allowed for my international relationship 🙂

As a native Phoenician who has already seen 100 degree days this week, I never thought I'd be saying this. I'll be stocking up on cold weather clothes!! Phoenix tends to have 2 seasons: death summer and mild winter. I'm so pumped to live somewhere they say can have all 4 seasons in one day. However, I am sadly lacking in proper footwear, outerwear, etc. There will be lots of online shopping and getting rid of warm weather stuff in my future. I will be sad my entire shoe collection isn't made up of sandals though...

It's also weird how the UK style is so much different than American style haha. I'm only bringing like 3 pairs of my jeans cause they don't really wear them there, but I'll be stock-piling on leggings lol. Well once I get there really cause they're MUCH cheaper at Primark than any American store. And I'm nervous to bring shorts, one because it might not get warm enough and it may be considered less than appropriate in Europe 🙁 but I'll seriously miss my cute gray jean shorts! Don't forget your Wellies ckd! Or you could buy those there too lol too much hassle to move them I suppose. I'm a bit nervous myself to move my life to the UK! Bringing a huge suitcase and another bag, as well as 2 carry-on's to hopefully bring as much as I can!

I really need to learn how to use Skype since we'll definitely be using it. I'm just so non-tech savvy! I'll have lots of learning to do this summer between Skype and a laptop :scared:

Me too! I have a skype account but I've only used it to get a local number so that I could call London to sort things out with RVC. But I also currently don't own a video camera or a microphone. The laptop I plan on getting will have it, but I have to learn how to use it as it will be my main method of communication with family/friends.

I was told there's no canned tuna fish in England. A friend said he had a few guys come from England to stay with him for a while and they loved the canned tuna and said they can't get it there. I've also heard that mac and cheese in a box doesn't exist...which is unfortunate, 'cause I'm a fan.
