I am studying from the kaplan book and noticed that it doesn't seem detailed...it has been awhile since I have taken biology and gen chem and was wondering if any one can suggest any other books that would help me study. Thanks

WARNING: Do not rely on Kaplan alone. I used a lot of other books and software for DAT. Buy Destroyer, schaum's, Cliff's, Crack teh Dat PAT, top Score, Achiever, Barron's, 501 Math problems, I also used a reading comprehension software called eyeQ and exam crackers 101 passages. Most of my things are sold. You may pm me for prices or check my post under For sales and adverstisemsnt under "DAT material for sale"--shvora.

Ya, study from the Kaplan book, but be prepared to supplement it with other things. I just started using dat achiever and I really like it. I wish I had been taking the tests all along to see where I needed to concentrate my studies. Cliffs AP biology book is a really good review. Some folks say its better than the Schaums review, but I have not seen Schaums to really judge. I feel it gives a great biology overview, but doesnt give me the detail in some areas I feel I need. Examkrackers general chem was a fantastic general chemistry review I thought. If you can answer those questions, there is nothing that can stop you in gen chem. I have their organic and biology book as well. The organic doesnt seem as well made(some typos, bad questions), but it is still pretty solid. The biology book I picked up and it has a lot of MCAT type passages(which of course what the book is made for). However, there are a pretty good number of independent questions (like the DAT) and they offered a decent review as well. The last study material I have been using is the DAT destroyer. That book is plain discouraging. The questions in organic are overly difficult and if the DAT was like this book a 12 might be a good DAT score. It seems to focus on the exceptions to the rules, which...honestly, I wouldnt waste time learning until much much later. The math section was overly easy and filled with errors. It has helped me a bit, but its not worth the 180 dollars or whatever it costs to buy it and pay for shipping.

All of these study guides are nice for offering you a short explaination on the important topics. However, keep your old textbooks handy. If theres a concept you are having trouble with, these guides generally do a poor job of doing a great explanation. They are mostly useful to "relearn" material you have forgotten. General chemistry for instance I had taken over 6 years ago and had long forgotten everything. I first took notes and read the kaplan review. Then, having my textbook handy while going through the examkrakers questions brought back all that old knowledge and taught me a lot of things I dont even remember going over.

This is a very very popular question on this board (understandably), so if you want a really thorough answer to the question, i would search for old links.

But I thought it important to just note that I agree with Willem that you should definitely keep your old books handy. However i dont agree that the kaplan is a good book or that the destroyer is a bad one. I found kaplans insufficient in every way, and was only good as a basic overview of material you need to know much more in depth. Destroyer is a bank of knowledge, and while some of the questions might seem random, get ready for it bc the dat asks random questions. Again, check old links for good descriptions on better details on all sources out there. Good Luck!
