Does anybody in this forum currently attend OU?

Does anyone know if a non-resident can get residency after one year like in Colorado(especially if a home is purchased)?

I appreciate any input...

BASIC PRINCIPLES GOVERNING RESIDENCE
1.Attendance at an educational institution is interpreted as temporary residence; therefore, a student neither gains or loses resident status solely by such attendance.
2.A nonresident student attending an Oklahoma college or university on more than a half-time basis is presumed to be in the state primarily for educational purposes.
3.An individual is not deemed to have acquired status as a resident of Oklahoma until he or she has been in the state for at least a year, primarily as a permanent resident and not merely as a student. Likewise, an individual classified as a resident of Oklahoma shall not be reclassified as a nonresident until 12 months after having left Oklahoma to live in another state.
4.All married persons shall be treated as equal under this policy. Therefore, each spouse in a family shall establish his or her own residence status on a separate basis.
5.The burden of proof of resident status or domicile shall be upon the applicant. Petition forms for in-state tuition classification can be obtained from the Office of Admissions.
6.Initial classification as a nonresident student shall not prejudice the right of a person to be reclassified for subsequent semesters, provided proof of residence can be established.

Theres a bunch of hoopla that I found at the OU website. Pretty much #3 answers your question......... I think. You have to be living in Oklahoma for 12 months before you are considered a resident. Hope that helps!! Good luck!!

JoJo,
I do believe after one year you gain residency status. Are coming this summer or what? 😎

You can gain residency if you are in Oklahoma working full-time at least 12 months before school starts. Other than that, you have to marry a state resident.

One of my classmates's wife counts as a state resident since she has met the employment requirement, but he doesn't because he's only been here as a student, so he still is paying out-of-state tuition. He's looking into divorcing and re-marrying his wife (there is a required time period that he'd have to stay divorced) so that he'll qualify for in-state tuition. Considering it'll save him about $20,000/year, you can see why he's looking into this.

Buying a home makes no difference in this policy.

Hope that, along with the previous info posted, helps you out. 🙂

Would love to go to OU. I am still deciding though. If I could just figure out a way to get residency......

I really enjoyed my time in OK and think the school is great.

The above comments regarding gaining residency status at OU College of Dentistry used to be true. However, just in the last 6 months the pres of the school changed the requirements.

It is much more difficult to gain residency. You cannot gain residency status after living here for 12 months even if you buy a home, etc.

The crack down occurred due to "rising costs" most schools are facing. By giving residency status to non-residents after 12 months the school is losing a substantial amount of money.

The school has also increased the number of non-residents they accept. It was hovering around 4 or 5 a year, now it will be close to 10.

The best shot you have at gaining residency status (this is from the person at the Health Science Center who handles residency status) is to live here for 12 months and show an intent to stay in the form of an offer letter from a local dentist stating you will practice with him/her upon graduating.

Hope this helped. If you have any other questions, please ask and I know the answer I will let you know. If not, I can find out for you.

Good Luck in deciding!!

OU is the RIGHT choice!!
