Hey guys, I was unexpectedly accepted off the WL from MU-COM yesterday but I have to respond by today if I will take the spot or not.

I was already accepted and paid my deposit for OU-HCOM and have signed a lease and paid a deposit for my apartment. I really loved both schools and I am not sure which school is better.

OU-HCOM has cheaper tuition, $37,000 per year (I am in-state) vs MU-COM $53,000 per year.

OU-HCOM is public and has a lot of connections over ohio but MU-COM also has great hospital affiliations.

OU-HCOM is in Athens which is pretty rural but MU-COM is in Indianapolis with a ton of hospitals and a lot do to.

I am primarily interested in EM and both schools appear to have good match lists and I really felt like a good fit for both during interviews. Which school is a better choice?

OU. State school, more residencies associated, more established. They don’t compare even if the tuition was the same. With OU cheaper, it’s a no brainer.

Okay, thank you for your input! I know MU-COM is newer but I wasn't sure if the location and connections in Indianapolis would be better than what's available in Athens since it's pretty rural.

What connections are you wanting? Indy is dominated by IU connections wise

To be honest, I am not completely sure. During my interview, MU-COM spoke highly of their affiliations with hospitals and the 'connections' that students are able to make to help them find a residency. I do not completely understand the importance of location/hospital during clinicals and how that impacts residency. I just didn't know if being in a larger city would have more opportunities for better rotations or anything like that. As long as I get the same experience at OU, I'll gladly attend

I think you’ll have better rotations, connections, and residency opportunities at OU-HCOM

okay great, I will decline MU-COM then. Thank you so much for the quick advice!

Pick Indy over Athens OH, it wont really make a difference anyway because a DO school is a DO school , anyone who says otherwise hasn't spoke to an ACGME PD, like if you want to match at doctors hospital in Columbus or kettering OH(affiliations of OUHCOM)then maybe but you can still match there from MUCOM anyway so it doesn't really matter and MUCOM does have an affiliation with St Vincent's in indy which is very solid in a big city vs Athens OH, its a no brainer even though OUHCOM is a very good school but in this case I would pick the better location.

Ya you’re trippin. You aren’t wrong about a DO is a DO is a DO to an unaffiliated ACGME program. But you absolutely always go to the program with more affiliated residencies. And a state program will have more support and residencies in non-pcp specialties. Especially more than a new program

Thank you both for your input, I really appreciate the advice 🙂
