OUCOM Discussion Thread 2011-2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For those of you who haven't gotten an interview yet, don't worry. I applied in August last year and didn't hear anything till January, and was accepted right after the interview. So don't freak out, you'll be fine. For what its worth, I didn't do the 2nd recommendation or have a letter from a DO.

If you don't mind and Im sorry to be nosy, but what made you a competitive applicant?

I wouldn't worry too much, i just got my interview invite today. primary complete Sept 10, secondary invite October 18, sent out out October 22. Interview for December 9th, anyone else?

I was complete on Oct. 18 so hopefully that means good news is on the horizon. 😀 Good luck with your interview!

Mark me down for an interview on December 2nd! I don't remember when I sent in my secondary...mid October I think...but I called on November 8th to make sure they received my letters and it turns out someone forgot to add them to my file. Soooo I was complete 11/08 and the invite letter was dated 11/09! This is my top choice, so I am extremely excited!!!

Just got an interview invite for December 9th! This is definitely my top choice. Anyone have a recommendation for a hotel to stay at?

Just got interview on Dec 9th. Out of state, complete early September. Excited to check out the school, I've heard good things!!

Sorry it took so long to reply; my stats specifically were 3.5c 3.4s 30(11P 9V 10B) MCAT, non trad, 4+ years of research. GPA wasn't so great, but maybe the interview just went well! I really liked the school and the people, but ended up going closer to home.

Did you all receive your interview invite through e-mail or snail mail? I sent my secondary in yesterday and realized that I had addressed it my apartment at school. I'll be going home in a few weeks for break so I don't want a possible interview invite :xf: to be just sitting in my mailbox!

it will be snail mail. took them only 2.5 weeks to get back to me after secondary was sent.

Any idea when oucom will start a 2016 facebook group?

I was thinking the same thing! Hopefully soon...I'm guessing it should be sometime soon after the first deposit is officially due on Dec. 15

Has anyone heard much from OUCOM? I called them the beginning of November and they told me that I am complete and before the board for review. I called them two days ago and got the same response. Are they moving slow, or just not interviewing many SDNers?

I received an interview invite roughly two weeks after my letters were put up on VirtualEvals. Never called to get a status on the completeness of my app. Letters submitted November 10th invite November 22nd. I'm sure it varies from person to person though...

I will say, the campus really impressed me. I would love to go there. Be finding out monday

Just in case anyone was wondering/interested, the OU-HCOM Class of 2016 Facebook group and page is officially up! I stumbled upon it when I was on Facebook earlier. It'd be cool if people joined so we can see who all will be in the Class of 2016!

wait listed, Heres hoping.

I was wait-listed at OU my first year. I took a killer grad level course load and got in the next time. I got all As, and they prepared me for the OUHCOM classes as well. I have done very well since getting in.

Hope this helps.

May I ask what grad program you did?

I actually was not part of a program. I went to instructors of record at Ohio State and told them I was looking to build my chances of getting in to medical school. I found classes taught by those associated with the medical school (I thought I might need letters of rec., but I never did). Neuroanatomy through the dental school stands out as one that I needed to really talk my way in to getting added. It was a gamble--if I did not do well, I probably would have sealed my fate.

The best chance for those on the waitlist or those looking to bolster their background in regards to these type of classes is to write the Admissions and ask for a list. I was given a long list of words ending with -ology. I went to OSU with that list and compared that to their course list.

It would help greatly to take an immunology or histology class for those looking to go to OUHCOM. You will not escape histology (as a PCC or CPC'er), and immunology stands as a great source of stress for most in CPC. If the idea of spending money on a class is hard to stomach, get a book like Dr. Klabunde's cardiophysiology text (ISBN-10: 1451113846 | ISBN-13: 978-1451113846 ). I think it helps greatly to just push yourself before arriving on any medical school campus and fine tuning how you plan to study for the big show.

What grad level classes did you take and through which institution?

Would anyone who has already interviewed care to elaborate on some questions they were asked, or is there a website with a list of some specific questions?

Thanks in advance for any feedback

Check out the "Articles & Interviews" section at the top of the page. Click on "Interview Feedback" and find OU-COM. That'll give you information on possible interview questions and other useful information.

I'm assuming you're interviewing there in the near future... so good luck! 🙂

They were pretty standard questions when I interviewed, things like why osteopathic, where you see yourself in 10/15 years, why OU-HCOM (or Ohio), something about yourself that isn't on your application, etc. The only somewhat 'unusual' question I was asked was how do you feel about the health care system and do you think everyone should receive the same benefits, etc. Other than that the interviewers asked about some specifics of my application, but nothing difficult or off the wall. They were very friendly and helpful, and the interviews themselves were conversational and easygoing. Good luck!

Interviewed here yesterday. Best school I've interviewed at so far and easily my top choice now. Interviews were laidback, everyone is nice, the campus is great, the academics and residency spots are outstanding, and yeah...i love it.

If I get accepted here Monday, I will be attending this school without a doubt.

just remember, if you dont get a call, that means you are probably on the waitlist. If that is the case, make sure you call them. Ask them what your weaknesses were and if they could be addressed. Itll help you on further interviews, but also possibly help your chances on the waitlist.

Did anyone get an e-mail this morning?

Yes I got that the Congratulations email at exactly 7:47am this morning! I am sooo happy. I was amazed by the school!! And will definitely attending in the fall.

Anyone else get accepted from the 1/27 interview date? Is there a facebook group?🙂

mind my asking what your stats are?

Any advice out there for a OOS looking to apply here in the next cycle (fall 2013)?

Congrats to those of you already accepted somewhere and good luck for those of you still waiting to hear!

Have an mcat 27+, have some volunteer work (something where you are in direct contact with people)<--- very much needed, maintain a strong gpa and keep everything personal. One thing that I liked about this school is that it wants to see you as a person, not just stats. Other than that just good luck! Oucom does have a preference for Ohio students, but that doesnt mean you have no shot, just means you need to be a strong candidate.

The biggest unknown will be my MCAT and Im planning on taking it in Ohio.
Thanks for the suggestion... and here's hoping!

Correction: Not planning on taking it in Ohio, planning on taking it in May. Not enough sleep last night apparently.

That's a shame... Ohio has some luxurious testing centers.

In all seriousness though, good luck to anyone who's still in limbo!

This thread is so quite! Any interviews coming up? 🙂

Accepted!!!! Best interview experience out of all the schools I have applied to. Such a beautiful campus and really friendly faculty. I was sold in the first ten minutes. Anyone else from my group on 10 feb get in?

Any idea on how late they interview? I'm assuming since I haven't heard anything I'm getting the silent snub, but as an IS student I'd love to get some consideration!

Here is a spread sheet that compares match lists, GPA/MCAT scores of matriculates, COMLEX scores, and other types of data. It includes:

-2011-2008 Match lists for many osteopathic schools
- comparison of match results between schools
-GPA/MCAT scores, a profiles of average matriculating students compared between all Osteopathic schools,
-COMLEX scores for some schools
- You'll also find comparison of tuition / graduate indebtedness between schools

https://sites.google.com/site/osteopathicreference/home

(I can't host the spread sheet on the forums because of size limits)

I apologize in advance that I will be mass posting this through out the forums this afternoon but many people have been looking for this data and I want the to be able to find it!

When I called the admissions office a few weeks ago they said they expect to keep interviewing until April 22. Hope we get interviews, I'm IS too!

Did anyone else receive good news this morning from the 2/24 interview? 🙂

Just withdrew from entering class. I hope that is helpful to one of you! Good luck!

Definitely did. Thanks for the advice! Got accepted the same day.

for those of you on the waitlist, they are ranking alternates tomorrow. not sure if that means the waitlist will move anytime soon though.

I am also on the wait list, when did you interview?
