Dear Anesthesiologists,

I hope you are doing well, yesterday was a big day for us here - the 3rd year residents / Iraqi Board from all over Iraq and especially who registered to take the first attempt of the 3rd year OSCE exam which is constituted into two parts, the first part "Sildes" (equipments, EKGs, loops, xrays,,, etc) - 20 slides (40 minutes - 2 minutes per Slide) and "Stations" - 4 stations, each station 6 minutes last - timed !

The stations, where the resident will sit in a room with an Anesthesiologist - a teaching member of the board and will give questions - direct specific questions.

This OSCE exam is mandatory and a prerequisite to enter next year Final exam (3 to 4 attempts) of the Board together with the completion of a research project in order to obtain the degree of Specialist in Anesthesia and Intensive Care / Iraqi Board.

Our great Professors, Teachers are trying their best to teach us and make the years of the Board valuable, it is highly appreciated.

Back to the Stations - like Viva "Oral" :

The first station : Anesthesia for non obstetric surgery - mainly questions about teratogencity of anesthetics and anesthestic considerations.

The second station : Interscalene block - on a volunteer and next to him an Ultrasound to show where the proper location, indications, contraindications, precautions.

The third station - young patient with strangulated inguinal hernia with aortic stenosis - anesthetic consideration regarding goal directed management.

The fourth station - ICU - either
* Trumatic Brain Injury (TBI) assessment and management ER vs ICU or talking about
* Delirium assessment, RASS score, and Antibiotics stewardship
* Covid-19 with WBC 2000 and after few days 15000 - Management?
* ICU nutrition.

The exam was held at the Iraqi Board headquarter in Baghdad. I am sharing this with you in order to pass my experience as usual. It wasn't that easy for me either, we have to study different topics in different books and still my question "Which textbook you guys can recommend that has everything you need to make you a good Anesthesiologist and pass your boards? - but please not Miller, it brings the feeling of a heart attack!"
Imagine we have read so many the
- Handbook of Clinical Anesthesia - Oxford mainly.
- Clinical Cases, some topics
- Anesthesia Secrets, some topics
- and others - many!

So, do you have a recommendation for me? I tried YAO too, but it is again very huge too !

Ideas?

Best,
Amir

Even though it IS huge, I think Yao is an excellent resource and it's worth putting in the time and effort to read it.
