I was wondering how long I can be out of the country (if I can) once I submit my application. I will have internet access in order to fill out my secondaries. Also, I want to know if there is a reason why I shouldn't leave the country once my application is submitted.

There's really no requirement to be in the country. If you have access to internet and phone wherever you go, you should be fine.

I met someone at an interview who was studying abroad for the entire year, and he scheduled all his interviews back to back so he only had to fly to the US once. You can make it work.

If you submit first day (June 1st), you wont get secondaries until the day AMCAS is released to schools (Mid June). At that point, you will get automatic secondaries from a good amount of schools. You can be out of country technically until interviewing starts, but so long as you can do secondaries out of the country, you are good for a while. Interviews generally start at the earliest in September.

thank you for your reply! phew, i got the answers I was hoping to get

i have one random question but i didn't want to start an another topic: are letter of rec's submitted along with your secondaries?

Most schools participate in the AMCAS letter service, so your letters get sent through AMCAS. Being marked "complete" at schools means your AMCAS is verified + secondary submitted + LORs uploaded + MCAT scores received. So to answer your question, your letters of rec are not required until you submit your secondaries, but they go through AMCAS (and thus take time to process) unless the school specifies otherwise.

Most schools don't look at your application until your secondary, MCAT and LORs have been submitted. You don't have to submit the LORs individually to schools. You just have your writers send them to AMCAS and you designate which schools the letters go to. AMCAS does the rest.

Thank you !

Also, I read on another topic about TMDSAS's LOR form.
How is this different from the regular AMCAS LOR uploading?

I am using a school LOR service- so they will mail my letters to AMCAS?

thank you so much for answering my (dumb) questions everyone 🙁

I don't know how a school's committee letter works because mine didn't have one.

But otherwise, AMCAS provides a code/number that identifies the LOR you designated on the online form. The letter should contain the specific code/number so they can match it and upload it to your application.

In the case of TMDSAS, there is a form that needs to be send in with the LOR which essentially does the same thing. You pretty much waive your right to read the letter etc in that form. From what I understand, you don't need this if your letter is a committee letter.

oh my school does not have the committee either- i meant that i am using my school's LOR system (they hold and mail letters for you, kind of like human interfolio). For the TMDSAS, do i need to fill the form out or does the letter writer need to fill it out?

Thank you so much again!

Your contact person for that LOR will probably be your pre-med/pre-health advisor. If not, find out who the contact person is. You'll do what StoicJosher said and print out that form with the number and give it to the contact person at your school. They'll take care of the rest.

Yes. You have to fill the individual forms out saying you waived your right to read it and attach it to each letter. Typically, you fill out the form and give it to the LOR writer who will then add the form to the letter he/she writes.

If there is no formal Health Professions Advisory Committee or Letter Service at your institution, two individual letters of evaluation are required. Evaluators should know an applicant well enough to evaluate him/her both academically and personally. It is recommended that your evaluators be current/former professors that can speak to your academic ability in the sciences.
Be sure evaluators include your full name and TMDSAS ID number on evaluations. Individual evaluation letters should be accompanied by the TMDSAS Evaluation Form (with the waiver signature line completed) if the student is waiving his/her right of access to the evaluation letter. If TMDSAS receives an evaluation letter without the TMDSAS Evaluation Form, it is assumed that the applicant has not waived his/her right of access to the letter.

EDIT: This is for TMDSAS. Follow Ismet's advice for AMCAS

oh, so my school's LOR office should take care of sending it to AMCAS once I provide them with my ID #

wow thank you!

If I already got letters from professors (last year) and I did not know about the TMDSAS forms, should I go back and ask them to fill out the forms?

The TMDSAS Evaluation Form is strongly recommended by the medical schools. TMDSAS will accept letters of evaluation that arrive without the Evaluation Form.

Thank you for all your replies StoicJosher!

I am debating whether or not I should ask my past letter writers to fill out the evaluation forms. :scared: But is probably better to be safe than sorry for sure
