I was trying to get a little insight into whether or not California RadOnc residency programs (especially UC programs) have a strong preference for Cali residents or if out-of-state applicants are equally considered. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

i am from the east coast and was offered an interview at 3 cali progs (neither was ucsf or stanford). none were particularly good. in fact, from speaking with others on the trail, i wouldnt recommend any of them (except ucsf or stanford, where I didnt go so I cant say).

i think the issue is that in part, programs want people who want to be there, so if you are from the place or have family there, that's a nice thing.

UCSF does not discriminate based on state residency Of the 12 residents in the program, only 3 went to med school in California (or on the west coast for that matter).

That's 25% from California. I doubt Cali is even close to 25% of the applicants they receive. Clearly the Californian's have an advantage. (I'm NOT saying that UCSF intentionally discriminates.)

Well, as of July 2008 it will only be 2 out of 12, though I see your point. However, as stehpew said people who are from the West coast tend to want to stay there so the equation factors the applicants preferences heavily as well.

Right. Being from the midwest, I have certainly seen a preponderance of those matching are from the midwest. Are we discriminating against the outsiders? Maybe a little, but mostly it's just that most poeple who haven't lived here aren't thrilled about doing so.

That's a good point. Do you think, though, that if your home is in say California or Florida, and you went out of state for med school, you'd still be considered a "wanting to be there" candidate to that program? I figure a lot of people who went to an out of state med school would express a strong desire to return to their home as well.

for what its worth, univ of california-irvine is on probation...

I grew up in Colorado, but they were the first to send me a rejection.
