out of state for texas schools

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Not a fan of peanut butter and jelly, but every once in a while I crave peanut butter and whipped cream...

Hmmm dunno if I'd enjoy that...

And thanks for emailing them... not great news, but its something. And I agree dd, its so cruel to make us wait so long just to get a waitlist or rejection...

I wonder if utmb is one of those schools that waitlists everyone they interview, or if you actually have some sort of shot if you're on their list?

Last year people got waitlist letters ~7-10 days after the match. The list had ~ 200 people on it. Whether OOS are treated separately, I don't know. Right after the match, there were 10 OOS planning on attending (out of 21 offers made), and that is about what matriculated. So either they had amost no turnover in OOS, or they made a concious effort to replace OOS turnover with OOS.

Hmmm dunno if I'd enjoy that...

Meh, I've "needed" it only a couple of times over the years. No idea why. Brownies are really my favorite thing. Just don't desecrate their holiness with nuts, etc🙄.

Yeah it's always kind of weird when you have this nice soft brownie and then randomly crunch into a walnut...:barf:

It just so happens that I make the best brownies ever. Ask anyone. Which is why you should tell UTMB to accept me... I'd make them all the time for you.

And agreed about the nuts. Not cool.

It pretty much destroys their texture. IOW, the whole damn point.

Oh no. You ought not to have said that. Your oven's gonna want a restraining order against me. If the Salvation Army served brownies daily, I'd be homeless in a heartbeat.

Lets see, show up tomorrow at the admissions office...bring some wine, flowers, a little Marvin Gaye...

"As of now the class is over seated. We will be making offers later on as more applicants withdraw."

That's all Joanette had to say about that for utmb. So....more waiting :bullcrap:

Which is the standard line. Unfortunately, there's a snowball's chance that people will withdraw🙁. I'm just full of sunshine.

Is there not a fair amount of people with multiple acceptances that will have to withdraw? Or is utmb just really high on most people's lists?

Sure, but not enough will do so before the deadline. They sent 430 prematches last year for 180 in-state positions. Too many will wait till the last minute, which is ~ 10 days or so before the match. I can't imagine they'd start sending out OOS acceptances in those 10 days while getting ready for the big day and all. Hopefully I'm wrong, but I think you're waiting till after the match...ie...the waitlist.

Edit: I might add...when I was waiting last year at this time and I emailed them...the answer was almost word-for-word the same.

Man that blows, and from what I seem to be hearing all the oos people that actually matriculate in texas schools got in before the match, so that doesn't leave us in a very good spot. 👎

Ouch... just lost the chances w/ the brownies my friend.

What! Why? WHYYYYYYYY????? If you don't hear from me for awhile, its because I'll be curled up in my underwear whimpering in the corner of some gas station's public restroom....lol.

How were the finals...you seem to have survived?

Hang in there man. Any luck with the GA schools?

Dr Thomas, if you're reading this, let these people in! C'mon, we can spare a few slots.

Well its just that I probably won't be making a trip to Galveston again unless I get in... so its really not my fault!

And finals, yes, I survived! My med micro class had a horrendous final... the highest grade on it was a 81 and the avg. was a 55. I needed a 60 to keep a regular A and slid past w/ a 71 haha... never been so happy w/ a C on a final haha. So all A's for me... and now I'm off to buy myself presents 🙂

Cheers to that! 👍

One was fairly recently the other in jan, so it would be a while before I'd hear from them.

I was kind of pulling for utmb as it's really close to where I use to live. Yeah come on with those spots, what would two spots for lacrosse and I hurt? 🙂

So after Jan.15th, they send out the last acceptance offers to out of state students? Hope they spare another spot for me!

Oh, yeah I know...my thought process stopped at "no brownies"...haha.

THat reminds me of a microecon test I had. Class avg was like 33, and the prof was so mad he lectuerd us the whole next class about how pathetic we were, and made us retake the test a week later. People still failed, but I managed a B, so he shook my hand....lol.

Hey, did you like doing research? What's it like day-to-day? Never done it, but I might have to so I'd like some opinions.

Hey, did you like doing research? What's it like day-to-day? Never done it, but I might have to so I'd like some opinions.

You know, when I came to college, I was anti-research. I didn't want to spend my time in a lab doing something I didn't want to do, like washing dishes or doing something else equally as meaningless. But, when I took Animal Physiology, my professor talked about stem cells and the work his lab does w/ them, and I was like wow, this is something I could do. I've been working there for over year, and its good stuff. I have my own project and will *hopefully* be co-authoring a publication very soon. But, I know that I'm very lucky. My PI is very into having undergrads get their hands dirty and really understand the research process. He is also very demanding in the amount of work undergrads put in, but probably because he is the head of Honors Undergrad Research.

What I do day to day... well, I'm there 7 days a week, because stem cells need care every day. My project has me culturing the cells and following our protocol to differentiate them into neural stem cells. This means spending an hour or two in the chemical hood every other day, and then about 15 minutes on the in between days. When I'm not culturing, I kinda plan out how I want things to work. After winter break, I'll be making 3-D models and taking pictures of them.

I do enjoy my research. That being said, I could not do it for the rest of my life. I have come to find that the thing I like most about my research is being w/ the people that are in my lab. If it weren't for them, it most definitely wouldn't be enjoyable. So, if you do research, find something you'd enjoy throwing yourself into, and make sure you like the people working there too! Sorry this was so long, but I hope it gave you an opinion!

I don't think so. Theoretically we could get offers after then, I'm just not sure how likely it is to happen.

Thank you very much. Usually I just get "oh, its alright" or something. Hmmm....sounds like I'd either really like it or really hate it. At the end of most days, do you feel like you've been more creative, or tedious? When people say they have their own project, does that mean they're coming up with and running experiments on their own ideas/interests? How does the co-author/getting published thing work? When you're doing all this, what is your PI doing? Have you ever felt like "I am a mad muthaluvin' scientist😎", or found yourself humming the theme to Bill Nye, the Science Guy?

As you can tell, I don't know jack about it. That's a lot of ?'s, but any help is greatly appreciated.🙂

Hmm the first question is tough. My work requires a lot of repitition, so on some days, especially when I was learning how to do it, it was boring. I wouldn't say its ever tedious (except when I have to do lab chores... but all the undergrads do). I came into the lab knowing nothing about research, so when I was told I would have my own project, it was daunting. But, it isn't as bad as I thought. We have 3 grad students in our lab, and I was given one of their recent papers to read. I found something in it that sparked my interest and hadn't been tested yet, so I picked that to be my project. I work closely w/ my grad student and he helps me so so so much. It's never as if they just threw me out into the world w/ no knowledge of anything.

As for authoring... my project has become bigger than I thought. My PI is extremely interested in it, which is great, because then the whole lab gets into it. My grad student is hoping to gradaute in May, and he has 2 papers to do before then. My results will be used heavily in both papers, so as long as I pull my own weight, I'll be an author on at least one. Many labs just put as many names on the author list is they can so people can say they are published. My lab does not work that way. If you want to be an author, you have to be able to stand in front of a committee and defend every single thing in that paper.

What is my PI doing? hahaha I love that question. I often wonder myself! I asked our lab manager (guy who organizes everything, pretty much the PI's right hand man) one time what our PI actually does and this is what I got: he oversees the direction of the lab. We have lab meetings every Monday and he gets to put his $0.02 in on everyone's project. But, basically all day, he sits in his office, reads research papers, finds grant $$, etc. Many people have more contact w/ their PI than I do, many have less. He tries to keep contact by meeting w/ his undergrads one by one each week to talk.

And yes, when my grad student brags on me or I look at the awesome pictures on my poster from the summer or when I think I could author a paper... I do think I'm a mad muthaluvin' scientist 😀 Bill Nye has yet to come.

Sounds pretty flexible/informal. I'm assuming published = journal? How long does it take to get it peer-reviewed, etc? Any insights into the difference between basic and clinical research? Do you think its something you'd enjoy longer term if you were a lab manager/PI, or is there too much butt kissing for grants going on at that level? Colleagues aside, if you couldn't have picked and had ownership of your own project, would you be considerably less satisfied? Good, I'm thinking that getting the mad scientist feeling every once in a while would be a requirement for me to enjoy this stuff.

What are you guys shooting for specifically? Neural tubes + stem cells....Parkinson's research?

Yes, published = journal. I honestly don't know how long it takes to get reviewed... it varies. Depends how big of a journal it is, and how many things people want to nit-pick. Also can't really tell you much for basic vs. clinical.

I would never want to be a lab manager. It deals w/ too much of being online buying products for the lab. And honestly, I don't think I could make it all the way to be a PI... and wouldn't want to. I wouldn't mind doing research again in med school, but its not how I want to spend a major part of my time. And yes, finding grant money sucks. I dunno if I would have been less satisfied w/ my work if I couldn't have picked it, but I do know that I enjoy having something to work towards rather than just doing odd jobs for other people.

We are working for a therapy for neurodegenerative diseases and brain tumors. One thing we specifically work w/ is Batten's Disease, a disorder known as an NCL. But, we hope to find something that can be used for Parkinson's, strokes, etc.

I'll have to look Batten's up, never heard of it. And really, thanks for the detailed responses. I'll give it a rest🙂. Well, since Tx is looking iffy, what did you think about GWU?

It's a really awful disease... People who have it don't live very long. Their retinas degrade and then their brain follows. Hopefully we can fix it 🙂

I love GW. It's a wonderful place to be w/ gorgeous facilities and awesome opportunities. I also have an interview at Univ. of Rochester in February, and I'm really looking forward to it. I'm still in shock that they offered me one (obviously my mcat's nothin to scream about) and I really hope they love me. Either way, its nice to know that I'm gunna be somewhere great next August!

And really, anything else you wanna know about research, you can always PM me 👍

has UTH accepted any OOSers yet?!?!

I haven't heard of any, at least not on here. Though I was looking at the stats from last year and they took a really small percentage of oosers compared to how many they interviewed, not sure why.

Googled it. That is awfully bad. Thank goodness its rare.

Rochester? You are aware that their numbers are WAY lower than ours, right? I mean, at least according to the Weather Channel🙂. Yeah, that's a strong school, nice catch. Bring some brownies. You've got to have a great chance at Mizzou too.

Haha...I just read the Tx thread. It seems someone got in at UTMB. I give up...why even try to predict this stuff. When did dd and I email them? A few days ago, right? Weird.

Haha when I called and told my mom that I got an interview to Rochester, the first thing she said was "Honey, you know its cold there, right?" and when I was booking myself a plane ticket the other day, my dad was right over my shoulder going "Look how far upstate that is... right next to the lake!" haha all for just one day of interviewing!

I think I have a good chance of at least getting waitlisted at Mizzou if they don't take me otherwise... but who knows. I'd have to seriously sit and think about it though, I mean, this is my chance to experience something outside of MO, right? But, it is a great school. Rochester, make my decision easy! If bringing brownies did the trick, I'd bring millions.

And I did read that about UTMB... crazy. I've given up though... but a letter/email telling me to lose hope would be appreciated...

Aw, mom/dad want you to stick close, huh? I'll admit, when I saw your MDapps I couldn't quite figure out how you picked schools...now I get it! It needs to next to a large body of water.

Ah, so this is an adventure for you. Haven't traveled much? Haha...another Midwestern girl longing to escape????

I got the email from them on tuesday, so I don't know. Guess they just wanted me out of their hair.

I hope that wasn't the case, but it does seem odd. I bet that acceptee int'd after 11-15. Only one, but it's better than what I was thinking a few days ago.

Haha yes they do... they are pushing hard for Mizzou or SLU. As for picking schools... it definitely had nothing to do w/ geography/climate... water = humidity = not a curly haired persons friend... cold = usually not my thang... I read the MSAR + school's websites hundreds of times, and thats what it threw at me. Who knows?

And, this is sort of an adventure I guess! I've traveled... a little. I just figured this is my chance to try something new for 4 years!... aka escape. haha

Well sure, I was just teasing about the water. I thought it was a good selection, and it was obvious geography wasn't a factor haha. I'd be a little surprised if you didn't have a couple more int's coming. Are you leaning toward Rochester over Mo then?

I'm with you on the traveling. Cancun and Alaska are the furthest I've been. I worked all through college including summers, so I graduatd debt free and was able to support my parents, but I missed the chance for going abroad and kinda got burnt-out. If I can get my financing well sorted, I'll try to do some in the next 8 months.

I hope to get some more interviews just to see my options. But lets just put it this way... if Rochester wants me, I'm there.

Shame on you utmb! You are officially off my christmas list!!! 👎

Shame on you utmb! You are officially off my christmas list!!! 👎

Agreed! But, I got into Mizzou today! Which makes me wonder... UTMB was the only place out of 3 places that I've interviewed so far that gave me positive feedback, yet I got into the other 2 places and not there. What gives?

You hear anything from other places yet dd?

Not a peep!!! 🙁 Though in all honesty most of my interviews were fairly recently, and I have a couple more to go. Unfortunately that fact is not keeping me from beginning to freak out a little. Hopefully large quanitities of christmas cookies and chocolate may keep me at bay for a while.

Congrats though!! Which school is at the top of your list of the ones you've interviewed at?

Cookies always work 🙂

And try not to freak out too much, so many people at my school haven't even gotten interviews yet. You'll hear something great soon!

My top school? I wish I knew! I was excited to get the acceptance today, but now I actually have to make a choice... which I never thought I'd have. Hopefully Rochester loves me in February (forever away!) and then it will be an easy decision!

Haha...it was only a matter of time, congrats. Well, you ARE OOS remember? Might as well be a 4 letter word, although since GW is private I bet it gets tons of apps. They probably just dropped the ball, I mean they let ME in😀.

Whoa, hang in there...you've gotten several ints, and the season really is still young. It's just hard waiting. You have a better shot than most at this point. Damn, how'd you get 4 Tx ints as an OOS?

I know, I know... I'm being greedy. 🙄 I mean, I just want to go to school w/ you so badly, ya know? haha

And dd... I have a feeling January/February 2008 will be your best yet 👍

Hopefully! Maybe some of your good fortune will rub off on me 😉

And I honestly don't know how I got all those oos interviews mykudu. I mean my gpa is good, but my mcat is less than stellar. I lived in texas when I was younger so maybe that made some impact...then again it could be the large briefcases full of cash I sent to the dean of admissions, who really knows.

Well if you get into UTMB though, your mom's going to be like "Honey, you know you might get skin cancer there, right?" God bless moms🙂. Thanks to you, every time I see the Todd on TV I think of brownies. Experiencing a hunger and desire for moist, chewy morsels at the sight of another man is NOT cool😡.

Jeez Louise man, if it took a briefcase full to get an int, what does it take to get an acceptance? Must be the weak dollar....not a good market for bribers right now.

haha I'm sorry! Food tempts everyone though... This guy that was in the lab I taught this past semester who got EDP at Mizzou wrote me a message that said "Trying to help make your decision easier: We will be in PBL together at least once, and I make a killer breakfast." At least I have awhile to decide.

That's got to be the first time pbl has been used in a pick-up line (which is what it was). Did you give him an A😛?

Rochester: 41 (wind chill of 35)
Galveston: 70 (refreshing 8mph breeze)

haha, I was going to say the same thing! Better watch out you got to school with him he'll be following you around for the next four years.

I think that pretty much takes care of it haha

In that case he gets the benefit of the doubt. But if you notice an extra fan at your intramural games that stands up and claps real fast every time you get the ball, we warned ya!🙂

Touche. But by the time you ARE in, I'll have you Pavloved to the point where you'll shiver at the mere mention of said town😉.
