out of state for texas schools

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yes, my 12-year-old daughter is going to Guatemala with a group from our church (almost all adults) August 2-9. She is very excited. I'm scared to death, but it is truly something she feels called to do. Our church is giving out two scholarships to kids in the youth group, and she wrote an amazing essay about why missions is important to her. She's always been very mission-oriented, and has dragged me along into it. I can't go to Guatemala, though, because that is the first week of class!!

Don't worry mom, its not that dangerous haha. If she doesn't get the scholarship, does she still get to go? Pleeeease mom??? My sister and her husband are both in seminary, with an eye towards doing international missions of some sort. They'll be in Asia this summer. Thought about getting my passport stamped as well, but dang its expensive to travel now with the $ like it is.

Opinions are split about the White Coat ceremony thing, if you've spent time in the Allo forum. Chances are she really won't be missing much. It is cool to put on the coat though. People on the street glance at you a little longer than usual haha.

A 21 year old who turns 22 on Friday... :scared:

Haha...I promise you won't notice any difference between 11:59 pm Thur and 12:01 am Fri (adjust for actual time of birth). I better say Happy Birthday now because I will forget later...so Happy Birthday! Glad to be on the same bat time, same bat channel with ya.

Yes, she'll still get to go...she'll just have to do a bit more babysitting and write a few more letters. Considering they were giving 2 scholarships, and I don't know of more than 3 kids who would've applied...I will be kind of miffed if they don't give all three kids the money!!

Considering all the other trips my spoiled kids go on (they're going to Colorado Springs in June - $550 each, camp in July ~$250 each, etc.), not to mention the $20 every time you turn around, $1600 (total) for a trip to Guatemala seems almost cheap! Oh, and let's not forget $5k each for braces!

Gee, the weather is beautiful again today...too bad I have to take my daughter to a violin lesson before we go to the son's golf tournament this afternoon. Then again, I could be stuck doing tax returns!😉

Cute video, but depressing!!

haha thanks Kudu... and I agree w/ cpa... funny video yet depressing at the same time 🙄

My turquoise poster is drying as we speak 😀

Weather was awesome here today too... finally spring like!

Happy April 15th!!! :clap::clap::banana::clap::clap:

Page 3 bump... and a thanks to Kudu for being the big brother type on my MDApps page

So I got really upset w/ my graduate student today. I am presenting my poster tomorrow, and my plan for it was to do a quick 2 minute schpeal (or however you spell it) to intro the research, and then go through the figures by saying this is what we asked, and this is how we answered it and then concluding w/ a ta-da statement. If someone wanted to know more about a certain aspect, they could then ask questions and we could talk about it.

So I wrote out things I wanted to say. Apparently, it wasn't good enough for the grad student. He started rewriting EVERYTHING. The lab manager tried to call him out on this, but the grad student just said what I wrote wasn't enough, I need to present more, and it's just not good enough... but it wasn't meant as an insult. Lab manager said "Uh, sounds insulting to me."

I dunno about you, but if I was a judge, I would want a quick rundown with time left over to interact so the presenter can teach me about what I want to know. But what do I know... I'm just an undergrad.

He actually called me and left a message saying he wanted to talk w/ me, but I don't think I'm going to call back. I'd rather not talk w/ him about it anymore. He's making too big a deal out of it. I'm going to present how I want to, and if it's not good enough, then I could care less. I am not there to win, I am there to show people what I've been working on and show myself that I've learned a lot. Winning is just icing... and honestly doesn't do anything for me. My name is first on that poster... so I'm doing it my way.

Oh that's right..tomorrow's the big day....:luck:

Happy April 15th!!! :clap::clap::banana::clap::clap:

That's just sad....

Grad student just called and pseudo-apologized... but still stuck by what he did.

I kept responding "mmhmm" and he was like I can tell you're still angry... and I was like no you fool I've just got better stuff to be doing than sitting here and rehashing this w/ you!

Is it graduation time yet?? 🙄

Yeah that's crappy. You're a 100% right. It's suppose to be your presentation, you do the talking. If you mess up, then it's something you can learn from. The professor I was working with did virtually nothing except look over my poster edit some grammatical stuff and show me one or two things I should add that I'd forgotten. You need to tell that SOB to step off, before you go school yard on his arse! 😉

A&M is cheap tuition-wise. It's when I see my kids' college bills, 'cause I won't have money by then!!

I'm going up to Temple this weekend to look for a house. I'm actually kind of excited.🙄

You’d think it was a Yahoo personal ad or something. Zapp Brannigan clones haha.

Hehe…I just used that word on your MDApps (spiel). I don’t get it, does he have that big of a dog in this fight? How long does he want it to be? How much money is at stake here? Your plan sounds reasonable to me. Isn’t this the guy who screwed up/contaminated part of your exp? He owes you one haha.

Can't wait for another exciting episode of...As the Lab Turns.

Sweet, that'll be fun. Lookin' for anything thing in particular...besides cheap and close haha?

How was the tax day to end all tax days?

Ah... I keep forgetting that TX schools are cheaper than Mizzou... woot for our 4.1% tuition increase for next year! And if your daughter keeps up this mission work, she should be able to get some sweet college scholarships 👍

That is exciting... I'm guessing you'll go into each house thinking "how can I revamp this???" 🙂

Oh I dunno... I just practiced what I want to say and its perfectly long enough. It's only like 500 bucks in the form of a travel grant which he wouldn't be able to use anyway since he's done in like July... and there's no way I'll win competing w/ grad students, and I couldn't care less.

I haven't been to the office since Wednesday...but I did have to go see a client yesterday. It's my old German doctor woman client. She showed me her dad's anatomy books, and offered that I could borrow them if I ever needed an additional resource. Mind you, they're over 100 years old, and in German, but hey, it was a nice gesture!

I am looking for a cute house, the smaller the better, actually (less to cool!), probably around 800 sf, with a garage. I actually care more about the outside appearance than the inside - I'm better at inside stuffs.

I'll let you know how it goes!

Good luck with you're presentation, lacrosse!! You'll rock it...and ignore that grad student. He sounds like a jerk!

Oh don't worry, TX schools will be increasing tuition as well. Tuition hikes are an inescapable fact of life🙁.

Thanks, cpa! He is a jerk sometimes, but, he thinks I'm "the greatest undergrad to ever walk the earth" and he's trying to get me published, so I guess I should be grateful for him. We just have our little tiffs sometimes... but I'm almost done!

I had a dream about presenting today... lame! 😴

So... presenting = AWESOME.

In the morning session, you get two judges who ask you to take them thru your poster and then ask questions. One of my judges asked me if I was a grad student which was kinda cool.

In the afternoon session, if your morning judges spoke highly of you, you get more judges. I had 1 guy come about midway through and was telling me I need to drop the MD acceptances I have and reapply next year MD/PhD... I was like uh yeah right haha. Then I had 5 judges come at once and they were like we've heard so many good things about this poster!! So that made me really excited because I'm in the Molecular and Cellular Bio category and there's like 100 posters in that category. So being an undergrad and picked out of all of those is really cool. I had another judge ask if I was doing MD/PhD and told me I should consider applying internally for the PhD. Then I had 2 more judges come by and ask "So what's next for you? Grad school?" and I said med school and he looked at the other guy and goes "Man, our loss." I was so happy w/ the outcome!

My graduate student walked by when I had a mass of judges and he was so excited for me. He was actually sweet and bought me this tshirt they were selling just to say good job. He was a judge in a different category but he said he kept hearing about "the girl w/ the turquoise poster"

I think I will have laryngitis tomorrow! I can feel it already!

Good job 👍 I don't think we can expect anything less than exemplary from you by this point 😉

When do you find out if you get any awards?

Hooray lacrosse!!! Awesome job!! I'm so excited for you, and I'm glad your grad student ponied up a bit. 😉

I think you should attach a picture of your turquoise poster for us to see, so we can ooohhh and aaaahhh with the rest of them!!

So we had a nurse come by work today and they were giving out Hep B shots (Apparently we get them for free 👍) I got my first of the series, and the needle was bigger than I thought it was going to be. Haha, and my arm is quite sore. Can't wait for the next one 🙄

The Hep B was a cake walk compared to the TDaP - That one hurt for a WEEK!!

I just checked my highschool records and had that back in '01. lol, you sort of scared me. I'm not sure I remember if it hurt or not. I guess I'm just so manly it didn't faze me 🙄

What doesn't kill you, right...🙂

Hello my OOS Texas friends...I just got my new MSAR in the mail today. I've gone through it and made a VERY preliminary cut based on GPA, MCAT, % OOS, etc. Anyone willing to take a look and offer some advice?

http://www.mdapplicants.com/viewprofile.php?id=10045

Oh, MCAT is based on a practice test. I've taken some other and my conservative estimate is around a 32, so if you could comment based on that score that would be great. And yes, I know that it would be much better if I had my actual score, but I'm not taking it until June 13 and will need to choose my schools before then...

Friday is the awards ceremony... I'd be honored to get anything since I'm among some amazing graduate students.

Thanks 😀 I wanted to do that... problem is, my computer can't hold the poster file since my powerpoint version is old. Maybe I can snag it when I'm on a lab computer though.

Oh and a funny story from today... so I'm standing by my poster and a woman walks up who is the head of undergrad research on our campus (she was taking pictures of all the undergrads by their posters) and she looks at me, looks at my name, and was like hmmm you look familiar... I was like uh yeah, I work in your husband's lab  she then looked up at my poster and realized the last author listed was in fact her husband, and then she acted as if we had known each other for a long time 🙄

So proud of our 39. At this rate, they may not let you leave for another school...Mizzou would fall apart. "Ve have vays of making yoo stay, comrade."

The only time I've had a prob with needles was the first time I got an IV. The nurse came in telling me how she was so good at them and how she was the one everybody called when they couldn't get theirs to work...then proceeded to screw mine up, and had to do it over. Dang those things are big!! When I left the hospital, I had a ~4 inch bruise following the vein they were pumping stuff into...ouch.

Thanks 😀 I wanted to do that... problem is, my computer can't hold the poster file since my powerpoint version is old. Maybe I can snag it when I'm on a lab computer though.:

Pull out your cell phone, snap a photo, and presto! 😉

Congratulations on all your fame!! I sure hope June is not too much of a letdown when all the cameras and microphones are gone!🙄

Sarge, if you get a min of 32, and money is no object, I'd apply to anywhere you think might want to attend/live. You might be surprised by the "reach" schools that give you ints, and the "safety" schools that won't give you the time of day. Prepare to get randomized. :luck:

Reminds me of our White Coat ceremony. We were in the reception area getting our coats and instructions beforehand, and they wheeled out one of the huge cakes for the reception afterwards. It said "Class of 20011". Everbody whipped out their phones and got pics of that haha.

Ooohhh...about to fall to page 3.

Well, I just talked to my husband, who is California, and I got to share with him the news that he missed his flight. He looked at his itinerary and saw that his flight was at 7. He thought he was doing really, really well by being at the airport by 4:30 (this is LA we are talking about). The only problem is, it's his flight from Phoenix to San Antonio that's at 7. His flight from Burbank to Phoenix was at 4:10. 😱

Southwest has a flight that leaves a bit later that gets in here at 1 am, but it is showing that it is full, not to mention we are expecting severe storms at 1 am. We're supposed to leave tomorrow morning for Temple. Could be interesting!!

Ok, so I just talked to the husband again. He's on a shuttle from Burbank to LAX to be on standby on a sold-out flight from LAX to San Antonio that gets into here at 3:30 am. I'm so glad I didn't take him to the airport, and he gets to take a cab home!! We're only about 6 minutes from the airport at least. I plan to be😴😴😴

Oh man, that's rough. Hope you're driving to Temple tomorrow and not him!

Wow, that blows. I really hate flying nowadays. When I was a youngin' I couldn't wait to get on an airplane, for the most part I'd rather drive when feasibly possible of course. The drive to Hawaii probably wouldn't work out to well...

The only time I've had a prob with needles was the first time I got an IV. Man I can't wait to start sticking people with needles 😀

Happy early B-Day lacrosse! :hardy::hardy::hardy:

Today has gone from bad to worse.🙁

My van is in the shop having extensive deferred maintenance done, so I've been driving my husband's car today. The power seat in it won't move back and forth, and is stuck all the way back. I'm pretty tall for a girl, but not that tall. I've had to stick a pillow behind my back to reach the pedals. This is the least of my issues.

We've been trying to get our act together and get a new front door for the hosue, which is not as easy to accomplish as one might think. So the guy from Lowe's called again this morning, and I said ok, let's go ahead with it. Part of the holdup has been that my door is an odd size, so he's had to go back and forth with the installer, who came to my house to do measurements, to make sure it was right. He informed me that the installer was killed in a motorcycle accident last weekend. This caught me a bit offguard, and I probably did not say the best thing I could've said (yikes), and the guy from Lowe's started crying on the phone. Not what I expected.

I have a stye on my eyelid, so I took out my contacts and put on my new glasses that I picked up yesterday, and have since decided they are not the frame I had picked out. I picked out a reddish frame, these are black. No, I didn't notice it yesterday in the store (not what I was looking for). These are fine, but still. 🙁

See above regarding the fiasco with my husband, who may or may not make it home, which if he does it will be no earlier than 4 am, after the thunderstorms.

The latest thing is that the people who bought the treadmill called this evening and it is not working. She broke her toe, so she hadn't tried to use it, but now it won't work! Ugh! Just what I need...guilt on top of everything else.😱 It worked just fine up until we put it in their truck. 😕

Some days you just have to wonder if it was even worth it to get out of bed!!

[\end rant]

What a happy birthday for lacrosse!! award ceremonies and the whole nine yards!!

Happy, happy birthday!!:hardy::hardy:

What a happy birthday for lacrosse!! award ceremonies and the whole nine yards!!

Happy, happy birthday!!:hardy::hardy:

Thanks for the birthday wishes you guys... hopefully tomorrow is a good day! Supposed to rain all day though... oh well!

I'll let you guys know how the award ceremony goes... I'm not expecting anything (there were 205 posters in my category, grad + undergrad combined), but it would be a nice surprise!

I was born at 9:22 am... and what will I be doing at 9:22 am tomorrow? Sitting in class listening to people Socratically discuss the teaching of evolution and intelligent design in schools... 🙄

Sorry to hear about the woes cpa 🙂 If nothing else it's Friday! That's always something to bring a smile to your face

The husband came through the front door at 4:10 am.😴😴

So, lacrosse, how was your earthquake this morning??😱 The New Madrid earthquakes and the fault have fascinated me ever since I first heard about it. It's a birthday present to remember!!

We had an earthquake???

haha guess it wasn't too bad if I didn't even notice it! And I woke up a bunch last night, just not then! Woke up at midnight when the boy texted me happy birthday, at 3 when my friend texted me happy birthday, at 7 when the boy's mom texted me happy birthday

hah now I just heard it on the news... 5.4... crazy! Apparently it was 150 miles south of STL... wonder if my parents felt it.

Dang, how loud is your text notifier that its waking you up? People could beat me with a sledge hammer and I wouldn't notice haha.

It's really not that loud... just 1 beep. Sometimes I hear it, sometimes I don't.

Oh yeah...
You are looking at the Excellence in Undergraduate Research Award winner! 😀

Uh, Captain, we knew that the day you told us you were presenting. We just wanted you to have the excitement of finding out yourself.😉

Congrats! 👍 So is that like the generic prize they give to everyone who presents a poster? :meanie: haha, j/k 🙂

And like kudu said, we probably would have been more surprised if you hadn't won. 🙂

Ah c'mon, need I remind you of all the times she's tortured us with the "I made incredible edible brownies! Mmmmmm! Sucks for you guys!" routine? Haha...jk 39😛.

No dude, that's Hanukah. I believe (corre ct me if I'm wrong 39) this one commemorates the Hebrew exodus from Egypt, and the end of their slavery there. Its a week long??? And leavened foods are not eaten. That's all I know. Uh...39, you've got some explaining to do haha. What else goes on during the week?
